Priests Battle Gold Mine Near Sacred Sites | Belfast News

A goldmine proposal in County Tyrone is sparking fierce backlash from local priests who warn of catastrophic damage to sacred churches and ancient graveyards, including St. Mary’s Church with its fragile foundations and burial grounds dating back to 1824. They fear blasting could collapse graves and destabilize historic buildings, causing deep emotional pain for families. Concerns also extend to the health of children and staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, with fears of contamination and airborne toxins. Supported by Bishop Donal McKeown, the clergy are demanding a one-mile exclusion zone around religious sites. Meanwhile, Dalradian Gold insists its underground mine is modern, regulated, and safe, welcoming dialogue as all issues are under review at the public inquiry.
