La música ha sido compañera del ser humano desde los albores de los tiempos. Los antropólogos han descubierto vestigios de flautas de hueso, ocarinas de cerámica, arpas y restos de antiguos instrumentos de percusión como tambores, maracas, sistros, etc. Con el correr de los siglos la música siempre ha desempeñado un papel importante en las civilizaciones humanas, ya sea desde una vertiente militar, religiosa o lúdica. Se han descubierto en lapidas de la antigua Grecia símbolos de un primitivo sistema de notación, también presente en papiros del antiguo Egipto. En las expediciones científicas, sobretodo cartográficas, también llevaban instrumentos de viento y a veces de cuerda para solazarse en las duras travesías. En los cuadernos de las expediciones de entonces hay muchas indicaciones que así lo atestiguan.
