Twice, Three, Two, five. Twice, Four, Five. Twice, Four, Twice, Four. Twice, Four, Twice.

Twice, Four in Radio with your boy Devine and Jay. We both here smacking, because we got a gang of Snacks on the table. Snacks on snacks on snacks. Jason has dubbed this podcast.

We called it, would you say, it's 40 minutes away? 40 minutes of foolishness. Today, we are talkin' about prints in the pulpit. Come on now.

Now in case you guys haven't heard, you probably had to be living under a rock if you haven't heard this, but the great musical icon, Prince, has passed away, and it was a huge loss from the music industry, being a musician, it affected me, just knowing how incredible that dude was as a musician. But that's not the angle we're coming with today. Not at all. 40 minutes of foodlessness.

And chips, these chips are so good. I'm smacking on these mugs right now. Man, this is like that podcast life right here. I'm telling you right now.

My dinner just consisted of gummy worms. And cheats out on this. And a Pepsi. I have barbecue chips, berry horned Danish and a quarter pound hot dog from Saturday level with this rivalry in the made Arizona.

Can we address that? Who has a quarter pound hot dog? At that point, would it not be sausage? Listen, you can call whenever you want.

It was dinner tonight. Anyways, they're going to be on edit today. We're going in. This is worth the podcast, OK?

It's 10.40 at night, Prince passed a few days ago. So we had some time to let this marinate. And this is what we did now. Every Christian knew, every single Christian knew that when Prince passed away, some pastor, who knew it, was going to try to find a way to put Prince in the sermon.

Happened in my church, happened at a visiting church that Jason went to. But we're not going to talk about that today. Let's talk about this worship leader. I'm going to play this clip in just a moment who found a way to change the lyrics of Purple Rain into some kind of worship song.

Actually, there's two different clips. I'll play two different ones. But the one that I'm talking about is probably going to take a listen to this right now. And then we're going to jump into it.

Come on, Cal, take a listen. Keep it up. That is what every Christian knew was going to happen. Yep.

And see, the difference is the difference. When somebody back in the day died, let's say like in the 70s or 80s, somebody huge, a monumental died, like this same stuff was happening inside the church. The difference was they didn't have cell phones, right? You didn't have the recording device.

You didn't record it. You didn't record it. But now we have access to see if the foolishness that is happening. Now, you know what that was.

What? That was praise dancing on a hoverboard. That's a perfect example of what that is. That's what that was.

That's a perfect example. Praise dancing on a hoverboard. First of all, is it praise dancing if you're on a hoverboard? I don't know.

That is going back. But part of me wish the hoverboard would have caught fire with them writing it? Yes. Yes.

As a sign from God. Yes. But listen, here's my question. And here's a question I think everybody wants to know.

Is it wrong? Is what that dude did? Is it wrong? Because he changed your lyrics to the word for Jesus.

Is it wrong? I'm not going to answer that question. Well, no. Because I honestly, I don't really care whether it's right or wrong.

I'll just say I hate it. Well, hate the strong word. I seriously dislike it. I once went to a spirit night.

What's a spirit night? Spirit night was like this lock in. It was a shut in for teens at an amusement park. All right.

Dude. It would have been a great time, except for the DJ played Chuck E. Cheese versions. This is why I dislike this.

OK. So you remember when you were a kid growing up, you used to go to showbiz. And then you graduated to Chuck E. Cheese, because Chuck E.

Cheese took over showbiz, right? Well, man. You don't know that. Let me just say that.

Oh, if you don't know about showbiz, man. The scariest animal in the world was the big gorilla. He was on the keys. Google it.

He just made you want to run. Google that. And he just looked like everything you would hear out of Isaac Hayes. Anyway.

Two tablespoons of cinnamon. The problem with what happened at Chuck E. Cheese was what they would do was take a pop song and make it a Chuck E. Cheese song.

That's the worst. Like a Chuck E. Cheese version of the pop song. Well, same thing was happening at this spirit night, where they took as basic a song as Baby from Justin Bieber.

Baby, baby, baby. Now, what did they replace that with? Jesus. Jesus.

Jesus. Yeah, exactly. Now mind you, at this point, I'm already on reach records and not on the label, but you know, this is what I'm listening to, humble beats. I'm listening to real, real, real Christian music.

And what I mean by real Christian music, meaning inspired Christian music, not inspired by the world to put Jesus to fake, you know, to whatever melodies are there. Actually, people sitting down, spending time writing songs, creating music that is original. And I can't, oh, you know what really grinds my gears? That's what grinds my gears right there.

It's unoriginality. Unoriginality. Well, here's my music. Here's my church.

OK, but I get that, right? And I'm told it with that. I'm completely forward. Let me play Devil's Advocate.

Please do. Let me play Devil's Advocate. The heart of the matter is to do what in that moment, right? The heart of the matter is, and this is where I think mostly happens, most of the old people say, I want to reach the youth.

So let me speak their language. Which is how you have Kirk Franklin doing the milli rock thing, right? This is also how you have, Jesus Christ is my inward. OK, there is a line that goes too far.

But the heart of the matter is, hey, I want to do something that will capture the attention of the youth. What can I do? Let me ride in on a hoverboard. All of the youthful love that.

That's why most old people hate youth services, because it's like this weird crossbreeding. It's almost incestuous in a way. Whereas, like, let me take the weirdest parts of what the children do and make it part of this traditional service. But in this instance, right?

In this instance, they took a song that people knew from both, here's the thing. Yeah, that wasn't for the youth. What's what I'm saying? Most of the time when you see that, it's when the old people are trying to reach the youth.

But this was clearly a preacher reaching back into his old friend. It was for him. Even right now, my mother-in-law, I don't even know if I'm allowed to say this on the podcast, her favorite movie and favorite song is Purple Rain. I never knew that until Prince died.

And she wasn't even devastated over him dying. None of that stuff. But like, right now, to this day, Purple Rain is it for her. Let me say I never said it to your own Purple Rain.

Well, OK, OK. Purple Rain. It was the guitar solo. Listen, Purple Rain, to be honest with you, for me, Purple Rain was more about more than the time for me.

Oh. More than I thought I was in love with this. Do the bird. Oh, no, no.

Like that swag that he had. That swag. Jerome. Like that kind of thing.

I was in love with him, right? But like, for me. And that's why people don't like life-seeing people. Because more is that?

Because the way he treats Jerome. Jerome. That's what we're getting off subject. My thing is this.

I know clearly that that movie was meant for a generation and it meant a whole lot, right? Yes. But nobody went into the pulpit trying to remix the whiz. Or nobody went, here's my thing, right?

How different is this than using analogies, right? Using analogies. Like FU? We're not going to code there.

Oh, OK. I'm always grabbing words. That's what I do. You have personal agendas and creatures.

And you're bringing them out on this podcast. I'm saying, like, for instance, OK, Jesus used, Jesus used, parables, right? And those parables were a real life situation that people identified with, right? Why?

To get to a point, right? OK. And then, like, even today, we as preachers will sometimes use symbolism. Like, we'll use something that happened to us.

And we'll explain something that we saw on that. Or sometimes we'll be in conversation talking about things that we saw in movies that may have touched us on Spire-Dess. Do you go to that? That's my failure, man.

And I try not to abuse that because there's a time and a place for that. I'd say that for anybody listening, they don't need no help. If there's one key to this whole thing. The scripture does not need any help.

The blood still works. The scripture still works. They don't need none of that. But I will say I get slightly juiced when I see a movie.

And I see some biblical principles that are inside the movie. Now, if I were to watch Purple Rain or listen to Purple Rain, and somehow, somehow, in my spirit, I feel like the Lord is remixing lyrics for me, right? Is it wrong for me to share with the church? And listen, I'm trying to tell you bad.

Like, it happens. Like, there'll be times you're just sitting there. And like, I remember one time I was listening to a climb back and forth. I mean, to the almond joint, mounds commercial.

Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don't, right? Almond joys have nuts. Mounds don't, right?

Get a correct note on that, right? That was you. That was me. But when I heard that one day, I was like, yo, that's like the diversity in the body of the Christ, man.

Like, yo, you can have nuts or not have nuts. And you can still be a marketable product. Where you going? Come back.

Jason has set up. I was like, yo, that's crazy. Like, you could be different and still be the same. Like, you could be almond joint.

You could be mounds. Take away the nuts. And you're still the same person. It's all about how palatable you are to a specific crowd.

Right? That means you're going to be right. You're going to be black. You're going to be gospel.

You're going to be CCM. You're going to be rap. You're going to be country. It don't matter, man.

Right? Small things like that. Right? So I got into the pulpit.

And I started using the sermon about almond joys. And I used that theme song. Almond joys. That's no.

Right? John Gray preached a sermon. And his benediction was so cold that he put thriller, he freaked the entire cross, death burial resurrection, to the theme song of thriller. And sang it.

That was wrong? I don't know. Okay. That's what I'm saying.

Well, why? Because he was inspired. That's what I was saying, man. Who just did this Prince song was inspired.

Something tapped on him. Now, listen, we don't have to go too far in our memory banked, to know that there was another musical icon that passed away. James Brown? Lesson ten years ago.

Trevie Checker, Michael Jackson. Oh. And if you don't think Man In The Mirror was sung in somebody's church. It was.

Big time. Is Trevie Checker dead? I mean, I had a perfect song. That is a double moment.

He needs to be like, but, yeah, I mean, but like, I think the real issue that we're having is we knew what was going to happen. That's the problem. We knew someone would be thinking about it. Because we're so predictable.

Is the church not predictable? Now that can go into a whole another podcast, but is the church not predictable and the question is this How far off should the hands of the church be to the world? What do you mean? How far off?

Yeah, how far off? What is this way? Um? How much are we supposed to know about the world?

How much are we supposed to participate in? Shelby checker still alive. I mean, I got a 74 years old. You see that that man looks amazing Shelby checker still alive.

He looks fake in that picture. It's like Nipsey Russell Slide some oil to me. I'm sorry guys. This is 40 minutes of Fullness here's what I think.

I don't think our hands should be off I think there is a legitimate reasoning and argument as to why there should be some sort of things incorporated if Jesus used parables that Spoke to the world outside the temple mind you he wasn't inside the church He was preaching the gospel out in the streets and he was using real-life examples Was he not? Yes, he was he spoke up. He even said hey Peter. I'm gonna go fish her men That was like a deliberate like a deliberate like aim to address a situation that Peter could associate with Economically for his job like you want to be a fisher, but I'm gonna make you a fisher of men Right true, okay, so how's any different than what my pastor says?

Oh y'all talking about Prince that died But I'm talking about the Prince of Peace. How different is that? Sitting in the congregation and that's what my pastor says I might walk out. No, that's corn.

No, no, that's corn to you But that's true, but that's spoke to a generation, right? Yeah, I guess okay I give you a perfect example right and then keep a program this last Tuesday. I taught a lesson called stay lit right? Okay, and I knew what it was gonna mean.

I knew what they thought it meant I knew that I knew it stay lit meant to them I even went to Urban Dictionary and told them what they what they think that definition means How long did it take you for you to explain it to them? Well the whole circle was talking about keeping your lights your light shining right? So at what point did you burst the bubble that stay lit didn't mean stay lit like they were thinking if I were in the Baptist Church It would be right before I start hooting. Oh, I said it up Bro, I said it up, bro.

You gotta set it up and it doesn't make an impact. What you said. I'm up Dude, I'm telling you it works, bro. You do the same thing.

Do what you just don't do it as overtly as I do Or I think I'm uh you do the same thing. I don't know. I don't think I have that kind of creativity You do it's not that I don't have it. It's that I refuse to use it Out of fear of what it's not out of fear.

Okay, let's let me let me what's corny to me if I feel like it's corny I'm not gonna do it whether whether it'll reach somebody or not. That's me being in the way But but there have been times or there could have been times right going by this logic that you had something that you were like This is not corny. It's gonna kill him and somebody in the crowd was like that's corny I'm sure right no way ever comes out to you. Okay, you know, we talked about that earlier the church is you know They're always going to encourage a little magic.

Well, okay. Let me let me take the conversation off the rails. Okay Let's talk about the fact that Prince as an icon, right? Gets thrown into he gets he's he crosses so many barriers because so many people hold him at high esteem, right?

Like a Michael Jackson. Yeah, right? Like a Beyonce for a musician higher than Michael Jackson I like it easy Beyonce just dropped this lemonade far more talented. Yeah, I knew that that had to come out I don't even know that it is right.

I guarantee you it will be in the pulpit this Sunday somebody's going to bring up lemonade Somebody maybe have a summer travel listen um if that is the case this is this is what I'm going to say Wrong say it's wrong. I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm saying it's cheesy. It's corny.

It's it's the Beyonce belonging to pulpit It's no what you're doing at that point is you're choosing a gimmick, huh? You're choosing a gimmick you're preaching on gimmicks, but okay, so so Prince in the pulpit is a gimmick it's a me Yes, but that's because you didn't grow up with friends the way the old people in yes, I did Oh, man, you went in the club with kids on You want to do it that stuff you want to be young? Dude, I have old soul so that music to me. That's my generation.

It's your general member I remember being like like like nine or ten years old singing when does cry I even know what I was singing But bro like okay, let's let's be honest though Like let's like to like like like the song is one thing to but to be in the club Like we have club joints bro like we have club joints like we have songs that right now if they came on who would know how to dance to it Like we're not dancing to Prince because we like little kids like like no limit God dude no limit soldiers bro mystical They did the no limit reunion on this cruise that I was on people started really throwing both I'm I'm a ludicrous came on right now. It was such a part of me Tupac. That's a perfect example Tupac was our generation That was us that was on that was our martyr. That was our hip-hop martyr was I give you that but still still it wouldn't have been Just a half place in the church.

That's the question. You're I'm asking you if it's wrong You want to get stands because I don't believe it has place in the church. That's my opinion. That's my opinion.

That's wrong It's my opinion my opinion is that it's wrong. Okay. My opinion is that that the word needs no help Okay, so we don't need to be gimmicky to attract Okay, I'm glad you said that the world does so what's the difference between that and your Christian rapper using metaphors that the world uses in their Raps like Andy many of what kind of metaphor okay? I can't think of this in Andy's ass.

What you get bring up something. Oh no it happens. You know it does Well, look right I'm turn That is clearly from the world that's not in the church either. I wouldn't I would hope not to hear I'm turn I'm the same but I'm saying like he's using it as a ministry tool So much as song in general The song is so close to selling like the world that I'm not allowed to play in church Here's a tough part about and this is not to make an excuse But that's the tough part about Christian rap is that you cannot separate the rap from the Christian.

Okay That's that's the struggle with Christian rap So the greatest song in their opinion their rappers But look great as a song with e40 correct. Can you do it in church? No, why not because what does he forty stand for up see there it is though there it is though He used e40 for his own purpose is that wrong? I don't think he used e44's own perfect.

He sure did no He put e40 on as a feature. He was gonna get e40's audience to listen to that song. I doubt that oh he definitely definitely here's my side on it I think that he is a person who knows a lot of people in the industry and He wants to do songs with certain people I don't think it has I don't think he has a goal or an achievement out of it Because it comes out on a mixtape because I'm mixing that almost does as well as his albums Only because of the popularity of the mixtape and people aren't because you hear well, okay, let's let's Keep it 100 here. They correct.

Keep it now the song will call wall It's probably the best one to me But if you keep it 100 just all in a in a nutshell there If you really want to be all the way real with it You have to remember most if not all of the listeners of Christian rap or Christian hip-hop CHH whatever you want to call it all used to listen to the e40 exactly exactly so I think it's in a sense to hear a song with LaCray and one of those artists you get an opportunity to hear Okay, that dude could rap without doing all that see without somebody dying so purple rain could fit in the church No Let's say let's say Israel would have done a song with Prince if Israel does a song with Prince I'm loving it. Okay, so how different is it? I'm loving it changes the lyrics the purple right because a preacher has a bigger responsibility than an artist So if I was a preacher in the pulpit exactly right if I was preaching the pulpit, okay, let's go with that So when Debo from Friday started preaching on TV was TV and wrong Huh was Debo wrong? Oh, let's go step further You cannot relate a televangelist Don't he's preaching that was a part-time televangelism though.

Don't he's preaching. He's preaching. He's my you okay. So is mr.

T He still is no, he's not always beyond Sanders. He's no preaching. No. They own churches.

They're not I'm not gonna pass right there. I still preaching bro. Okay. I'm gonna tell you prime time ain't preaching nothing Per example purple lane Apollonia.

What do you remember about Apollonia from that movie? Right nothing and you know what she wasn't immediately after that TV in two of this day to steal TV in true. Okay, okay for her Well, she changed her life. She stayed in the church though.

So as long as the person changes their life Well, it's about change, right? Okay, so exactly so it's about change. So can the preacher change the lyrics ah See what I'm saying you but you're still okay half that congregation is singing purple rain And Israel uses black cat and you use black cat On you are good you are a good bud. It's but is he wrong?

See I am going to lay this name. I think Prince belongs in the pulpit No, why not first of all if I can use Prince to get somebody to go to Jesus am I wrong? I don't understand how a little purple dude is going to get some way to go to Jesus You're gonna die because people are right now. You just go Prince a little purple dude Look, I love Prince's music, but it will never be meshed in the sanctuary if God uses if God can use it On the sanctuary is a holy place if God can use it on him The most preaching outside the same time.

That's not the point Not but he's also turned over tables for foolishness going on in the temple. What's the purpose of preaching? To share the gospel to with who with the world, okay? So if I'm outside the church, it's okay if I share the gospel on the inside the church is not okay That will there are rules to the tabernacle good sir If I do it outside and inside if I'm sharing the same gospel, I'm wrong Wait, what are you saying?

You say if I'm saying if I can preach and use Prince as an evangelistic tool outside the church It's fine, but the minute I step inside four walls. It's wrong How do you how do you use Prince as an evangelistic tool? How did you how did you overshadow? You know, how did Jesus use gardening?

How did Jesus use me? That's a very popular theme in the Bible in the Bible But back then it was like Prince. It was like every day. Everybody knew about this.

It's like it's a conno It wasn't a gimmick it was it was a way of life that was increased the only way you increase was from your cross Whether it be your livestock the president would be whatever you're talking about like growing anything He was talking about vine dresser, but it was about the it was about the relationship wine was about the work wine He related it to what they were doing. Okay. Okay, so people are doing yes It is people are into Prince right now and the time to capitalize when Prince dies nobody cared about Before we die anybody care about right? I agree with a guy right now you would have more sermons about Beyonce that will leave people to Christ the issue is not what leaves In the Christ is what's gonna keep them there.

That's my question true true, right? But I don't think gimmicks help people say what makes it a gimmick What it was why do you the way to Prince dies to do that? How come you didn't do it? Why he was a lot you didn't wait for it You just capitalize on because nobody was paying attention until he died.

Okay, is that what we're supposed to do capitalize on opportunity? When would you not capitalize on opportunity to share the gospel? But I don't think that was sharing the gospel if somebody dies and you go to a funeral You would never talk to those people about Christ you would never have in that room until that one person died So wait a minute So you're telling me this that you watch that video on Facebook or or YouTube with a young lady What's singing the the Maryday Blythe song one two a friend of mine three four all that? That was ministry.

I already been led to Christ. It didn't do it for me I'm saying I'm saying for those if I get a matter So if I get up to you I'm a young man who's been shot by gang violence and I capitalize on gang violence in front of a crowd that would not be in front of Somebody that died, but that makes sense. Oh, so Prince doesn't know why doesn't it make sense because it's in the sanctuary and that is Get we're talking about gang violence in the same story. We're talking about purple brain.

It's a song It's a real-life song that people identify with some people have sex and that some people have to drugs and that some people have Very bad memories. You have an opportunity to change that around for them I push a whole sermon on Iron Man congratulations, you have played the advocate well, but the fact of the matter is it's foolishness It's not knowing it's foolish as this 40 minutes that we're spending talking about I preached on Iron Man Yes, but you had a very good setup and premise to that The heart oh, that's where everything came from praise his name praise his name Is that not a great premise? It's not a great setup You've been good you've been good who's talking to you tell me I don't know who this talk to me I honestly don't know I had Al Green's daughter preacher he did and he stayed He still named the Reverend Al Green speaking of that that will be one of the things we need to write down for that second What Reverend speaking of things you won't find in the Bible. I know my new past reader.

No, yeah Well, you also want my internet won't find Facebook You won't find LGBTQ LGBTQ what's the cue queer lesbian gay? I'm sorry. Let's Lg lesbian gay bisexual transgender queer I don't know what queer was I mean, I didn't know that I've never heard the cue added on to the end I knew what LGBT was but I think that kind of got rid of it. I might be out Anyways, we're getting off the subject speaking to friends.

I don't know I'll leave it alone I did play the devil's advocate, but there are some parts of it that I agree with his execution was bad How you got up there in saying thriller I would have been like oh if there were purple raindrops falling from the ceiling it's still No, not a bit no correct He got if you would have got there a saying thriller or a bit like that sucks But I saw John Gray do the same thing and it made complete sense because he executed it well And I got the point it wasn't about really it was about Jesus rising from the dead Recording literally that was put together five minutes before the service started. No, no That wasn't well planned out who come up to the one we just oh, yeah Well, I mean it wasn't that's what I'm saying though like as long as Prince is presented in the light of Christ Let me see what was great. Let me take it the whole experience gives you inspiration to do so then you say it's him Here's what I love. Here's what I did like about Prince what I did enjoy about Prince Prince was not a person You would see everywhere.

It's only five foot two. That's why that's true. So musical leprechaun He also was not a person who? Would want to be seen So if he came in and let's just say he just showed up at the house of blues and somebody's on stage What have you he might just want to rock out with him and just jam for a minute?

He'll do that and leave he done that but he won't try to steal the thunder of whoever's up there, right? What I love about him was he's a musical genius that he is he could play pretty much any instrument that's true and He was an amazing writer and it's talking that I don't know how this I don't know how this goes I read a few articles. I know he was a Jehovah witness we started all right Somebody said that he converted and there are some of the I bought one of his gospel albums that was very very Christ-centered But you know you never know so I never know you never know so let's just say he was a man of the faith Mm-hmm. Is it okay to use him then?

No, not unless he's right now unless it's a gospel song Okay, no, no, I should he stopped performing anything that would defame that he stopped doing all his nasty stuff He stopped doing all those songs like live so you can't hear those songs you had to catch them before he had an experience right, right so So I'm more interested in him the man because he was he was quite a humanitarian. Yeah, he did a lot where that was amazing Even after he passed away that Fans went to his estate and received gifts while he was gone. Yeah, like like he had it all set up It was crazy any they all got a t-shirt with like albums and all kind of like who does that? Never see anybody the way you're talking right now.

You can easily give him the pulpit and be like let's look at us church When you die, what are you gonna leave the world think about Prince? I? Wouldn't need to think about Prince and you would say listen when he died He wanted his legacy to be one of giving if I want to talk about somebody who died and gave you Go to Prince you start with him with Jesus. No, I can start in Jesus.

Yeah, but then your sermon is five minutes long No, yeah, it is. I'm a Baptist preacher good sir. You know what I would do you a natabaptist preacher.
