It relates that she lived during turbulent times, so after her mother Likelike died, her father Archibald Cleghorn sent her to England for her own safety and to prepare her scholastically for the role she was meant to assume on the world stage. Cataclysmic events intervened with a coup d'etat that overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy. At a tender age, she stepped up to the plate to try to restore the sovereignty of her island nation.
