Private Sector vs. Government Failure in South Africa

In this episode of the Get Up and Go Breakfast program on Radio Cape Pulpit, host Anton Brink speaks with Dr. Peter Hammond about the failure of government institutions in South Africa and the rise of private sector initiatives that are filling the gaps. Dr. Hammond begins by acknowledging that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). He then outlines a grim picture of state failure across multiple sectors: Education – state schools failing to deliver textbooks; massive growth in private schools and homeschooling. Security – more people employed in private security than in the army, police, navy, air force, and correctional services combined. Energy – Eskom has been looted through corruption; private sector has invested massively in solar panels, batteries, inverters, and generators. Post Office – completely collapsed; replaced by internet and private couriers. Municipal services – City Improvement Districts (CIDs) and private initiatives now cleaning streets, fixing potholes, and maintaining parks. He points out that South Africans are paying twice – once through taxes for services the state promises (but rarely delivers), and again through private alternatives. He quotes the African Union's task force on corruption, which estimates that 25% of Africa's GDP is stolen annually through government corruption – in South Africa, that means more than a trillion rand stolen every year. He calls on citizens to reclaim their municipalities, especially with the upcoming municipal elections on 4 November. He encourages listeners to vote their values, to support biblical candidates who adhere to biblical principles, and to be salt and light in their communities. He concludes: "It's easy to complain, but it's more constructive to light a candle than to curse the darkness."
