Prodigal (Luke 15): Off the Porch & Into the Party
from Island Community Church (Memphis) · host Barrett Bowden
Today, we conclude our series "Prodigal," finishing our study of the trilogy of Jesus' parables in Luke 15. These parables reveal the heart of God and the gospel clearly for us to see and enjoy. Last week, we focused on the younger son in Jesus' parable who walked away from his father in selfishness and reckless living far away from home. Today, we focus our attention on the older brother in the parable, the other (equally loved) son of the father. Traditionally, he does not get much attention but his heart condition is just as needy as his brother's. He is just as wayward and distant from the father while remaining right there at home. These two brothers and their attitudes toward their father are reflective of how most people relate to God today. Both are wrong in their attitude, called to recognize it and change. In love, the father is hosting a celebration of his grace and inviting all to come in. How will the sons respond? Who will join in? What about you?
