Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and I are book lovers and we've decided to do a monthly in-depth book discussion. Our 18th book is Prodigal Summer, written by Barbara Kingsolver, and next month we'll be chatting about A. W. Jantha's Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel (yes, that's what it's called). What's Prodigal Summer about? "Prodigal Summer tells the story of a small town in Appalachia during a single, humid summer, when three interweaving stories of love, loss and family unfold against the backdrop of the lush wildness of Virginia mountains. The narrative follows Deanna, a solitary woman working as a park ranger; Lusa, a recently widowed entomologist at odds with her late farmer husband's tight-knit family; and Garnett, an old man who dreams of restoring the lineage of the extinct American Chestnut tree. Kingsolver's extensive education in biology is on display in this book, laden with ecological concepts and biological facts. Her writing also exhibits her knowledge of rural Virginia, where she has lived for decades. In the acknowledgments Kingsolver thanks her Virginia friends and neighbors, as well as Fred Herbard of the American Chestnut Foundation." Thanks for tuning in. The Phil Blog Phillip Hong Back when Phil was a young kid, he kept a note of his thoughts in a black book. This black book has been filled and he has moved on to journals of different colours, but it didn't seem complete to just write it. As a result, Phil decided to record his journal. On The Road Road Warrior On The Road is a podcast from Phil Owens, a/k/a the Road Warrior. Phil has attended every Oklahoma Football game since October 12, 1991 and is the founder of SoonerFans.com, SoonerPhotos.com, and one of the founding publishers of Sooner Spectator Magazine, and offers his unique perspective on Sooner Football and other things. Green Millennium, The by Fritz Leiber (1910 - 1992) LibriVox From the classic science-fiction and fantasy author Fritz Leiber comes this intriguing tale of a green cat. From the author's introduction: "The world Phil Gish lived in was not a pretty one, and Phil didn't enjoy living in it. He was disillusioned, purposeless, hopeless, and haunted by the fear that a robot would take over his job. But then Phil was a timid person, not much given to adventure seeking. If he hadn't been so mild he might have found his kicks at All Amusements, the syndicated playground where anyone could find fun, providing he had the proper sadistic and otherwise aberrated elements in his personality. But Phil was good—and bored. And then one day a cat perched on his window—not an ordinary cat—a green cat. For the first time in years Phil was happy. He promptly named the cat Lucky because he somehow knew that as long as the cat stayed with him he'd feel fine. But Lucky didn't stay long. In a matter of minutes he had disappeared into All Amusements park. It Phil Cruise Cast Philip Suarez A short and entertaining podcast for the latest cruise news and reviews from the UK
