Prof. Hanna Halaburda became part of the NYU Stern School of Business in September 2019, where she serves as Associate Professor of Technology, Operations, and Statistics. Her research delves into how technological advancements are reshaping economic dynamics and transforming business strategies and market interactions. Since 2011, she has been pioneering studies in the realm of digital currencies and blockchain, exploring topics such as consensus protocols, cryptocurrency adoption, smart contracts, and token issuance. Her insights have been featured in top academic journals like Management Science, RAND, Games and Economic Behavior and Harvard Business Review. Prior to joining NYU Stern, Professor Halaburda was an Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School, and a senior economist at the Bank of Canada. In this episode, Prof. Halaburda will explore her research topic, ‘Token Economics: How Blockchain Is Redefining Value in Digital Platforms.’ Token economics refers to the creation, distribution, and exchange of tokens within a blockchain ecosystem. These tokens represent value, ownership, or access rights in digital platforms and can be used to incentivize behaviors, reward participation, and facilitate transactions. One key aspect of token economics is aligning participants' interests by rewarding actions such as content creation or validating transactions. Tokens can be traded on exchanges, offering liquidity and allowing value to fluctuate based on demand. Blockchain's transparency and decentralization redefine trust, eliminating the need for intermediaries and empowering users. Token economics is reshaping industries like finance (DeFi) and digital art (NFTs) by enabling decentralized models of ownership and value creation, ultimately creating a new digital economy.
