PROPERTY: Social Housing History + Right to Buy - With Neil Goodrich

In this episode, Rob sits down to speak with Neil Goodrich, the former chair of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Futures. Neil starts by providing a potted history of social housing and housing associations, in the UK. Then, explain the criteria for the right-to-buy scheme. He and Rob then discuss the 2022 Social Housing White Paper. Focusing on what would happen if housing associations were forced to sell their stock off in a comparable way to the council house Right to Buy scheme.   KEY TAKEAWAYS In 1981, in England, around 27% of homes fell into the social housing category. Now, only 16% of English housing stock is for social use. Right to Buy was made worse when the treasury took some of the receipts generated by those sales. Now, most social housing is provided by housing associations. Right to buy is a significant discount on the market value of a council house.
