Protein: What makes a good protein?

from Rebel Health Reports with Dr. Amy Shouse · host Dr. Amy Shouse, DACM

Protein is the only macronutrient (the other two are carbohydrates and fat) where we do not spend much time discussing what it is made of! On a food label, you will see the breakdown of fats-- saturated, unsaturated, etc.. You will see the breakdown of carbohydrates--sugar, added sugar, fiber, etc.. But you hardly ever see the constituents of protein, amino acids, on a label unless that particular product is highlighting amino acids for some reason (ex. protein powder). Well, the quality and quantity of amino acids in a food is extremely important if you are looking to build muscle, gain better balance, better metabolic health or any of the benefits that come along with a healthy protein intake.
