Proverbs In 365 Devotions For more go to braggingonjesus.com Proverbs 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him. 9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but he loves him who pursues righteousness. 10 There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die. 11 Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord; how much more the hearts of the children of man! Acceptable Sacrifice R Aylor Today Solomon names some things that the Lord detests and some things the Lord loves. He just told us in verse 5 how we should heed our fathers instructions and now Solomon tells us what awaits those who hate reproof. Today's passage concludes by saying how the abode of the dead as well as Hell itself cannot hide itself from the Lord… therefore why should any man think they might hide the intentions or the true desires of their heart from him? So what is it that is an abomination the the Lord? Verse 8 says it is the sacrifice of the wicked. So, that was Cain in Genesis 4 who brought an offering to the Lord that was not accepted by him right? This was the Cain who would kill his brother and responded to God “Am I my brothers keeper?”. Hebrews 11:4 tells us “By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous,”. In the Old Testament it was those who brought sacrifices from a heart that trusted and delighted in God who would be accepted. These pointed to the coming Messiah… the perfect sacrifice for their and our sin. Whenever the wicked brought sacrifices it was a horrible taste to the Lord… It was rottenness… a detestable abomination to him. Today many still bring gifts to God by giving to organizations or churches in hopes that God will accept them. They may do good works or try not to do bad works so the good might possibly weigh out heavier than their sins and they might be accepted. The problem with that is that same wicked heart that has not been changed by God. It poisons all the works they do because none of the works are motivated or quickened by the Holy Spirit but by their own broken efforts. Only the works of Jesus are pure… We need his righteousness applied to us in order to be accepted by God. Our text says the Lord loves him who pursues righteousness… it takes a heart for that very thing… and it begins with pursuing not our own self righteousness but the righteousness of Jesus. The Lord will hear the prayer of this person and he will impute his righteousness to him and begin a work of righteousness in him practically. Our text says how death awaits the wicked and that was all of us… the good news is that Jesus died for us… and he gives his righteousness to all who turn away from delighting in sin and delight in him and his death or his sacrifice for us and his resurrection. Pray
