Providence and Osbourn Park Legend Billy Fields
from UVA and NOVA Legends Podcasts® · host Julian Brown
Today, I’m joined by Billy Fields, a 1978 graduate of Osbourn Park High School, who etched his name into Virginia basketball history as one of the state’s all-time scoring legends. During his senior season, he averaged an astonishing 40.7 points per game, and Billy is still the all-time leading scorer in Prince William County history.Billy's athletic roots run deep. His father, Wilmer Fields, was a standout in the Negro Leagues, excelling both as a pitcher and a position player before continuing his career across Canada and the Caribbean.Growing up in rural Northern Virginia, Billy excelled in multiple sports but ultimately chose basketball as his path. He went on to play at Providence College, setting a school freshman scoring record under Hall of Fame coach Dave Gavitt. By his sophomore year, Providence had joined the newly formed Big East Conference, launching Billy into regular battles with some of the era’s most legendary names—Patrick Ewing, Sleepy Floyd, Chris Mullin, and Walter Berry. The competition was intense, but Billy proved he could hold his own on college basketball’s biggest stage. From small-town beginnings to the spotlight of the Big East, his journey is filled with stories from a golden age of the game. It was an honor to sit down with him and hear them firsthand.
