A year into the COVID-19 pandemic, over 500,000 Americans have died from the virus and we face amplified disparities in severity, deaths, and vaccine rollout. Many healthcare leaders fear that the response to the pandemic has led to a widening gap in preventive and primary care for other conditions and that soon, we will see the consequences of this gap in higher morbidity and mortality due to preventable conditions. Further, they worry that an overstressed and exhausted workforce will not be prepared to handle it. It is clear that in the face of many challenges, leadership intention is not necessarily matching actionable steps to reduce burnout and overwork. The same is true for disparities exposed and exacerbated by the pandemic.
