גם אנחנו רוצים את מנתח הלב שלנו מצוין ואת רואת החשבון מצויינת. אבל! במגרש המשחקים שנקרא ״ילדות״, כדי ללמוד ולצמוח, צריך להסכים להרפות, לשחק, לשחרר את המטרה. מצויינות היא תוצאה. היא נגזרת של תשוקה עזה או/ו מיומנות גבוהה. בטענה שבינוניות היא המצוינות החדשה אין כוונה שמצוין זה רע, אלא שמוטיבציה גבוהה מדי, שמקורה בגורמים חיצוניים רק מחבלת בסיכוי להצטיין. שהמרדף אחר המצויינות הוא זה שמסית את תשומת הלב מן ההתמקצעות.
