In a surprise turn of events, South Africa's President Jacob Zuma announced that government will subsidise free higher education for all poor and working class students. Zuma made the announcements just hours before the start of his party's 54th National Elective Conference. Just four weeks ago, the Heher Commission which looked into the feasibility of providing free education advised that the country does not have the financial capacity to do so. Political economist Lebohang Pheko says the move is good but is ill-intentioned. She agrees with the sentiment that this will throw the new president of the party under the bus.
