Psalm 131

What does it look like to have a soul that is truly at rest? Psalm 131 offers us a surprisingly simple yet profound answer. In just three verses, King David lays out what we might call a three-sided secret to contentment, and it begins with something most of us resist: purging our pride. David openly confesses that his heart is not lifted up and his eyes are not raised too high, acknowledging the boundary between who God is and who we are. This is not a posture of defeat but of wisdom. When we stop straining to occupy space that was never meant for us, something shifts. Peace becomes possible. From there, David moves into one of the most tender images in all of Scripture, describing his soul as a weaned child resting quietly with its mother. This is not childishness but a chosen, mature childlikeness, a deliberate return to dependence on the One who sustains us. And finally, David calls us to hope, not the wishful kind, but the kind that waits and fully expects God to show up.
