Psalm 95
from gracepsl
There is a moment in Psalm 95 that catches you off guard. The psalm opens with an exhilarating call to worship — singing, shouting, thanksgiving, music. The language is full of movement and joy. God is declared the great King above all gods, the creator of mountain peaks and ocean depths, the maker of dry land, the shepherd of his people. It reads like an invitation to a celebration. And then, without warning, the tone shifts. "Today, if only you would hear his voice: Do not harden your hearts." (Psalm 95:7-8) The celebration is interrupted by a warning. And not just any warning — a warning rooted in one of the most dramatic and devastating chapters in the entire history of God's people. To understand why that warning carries the weight it does, you have to go back. Way back.
