Psalm 12: Silver Tried Seven TimesWe live in an age of words — more words, perhaps, than any generation before us has had to endure. And most of them are hollow. The psalmist knew this problem three thousand years ago: flattering lips, double hearts, tongues that say "we will prevail — who is lord over us?" It is the declaration of autonomy dressed up as rhetoric, and it is everywhere. But then God speaks, and the difference is like the difference between tin foil and sterling silver. "The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times." Not once, not twice, but seven times — the number of completion, of nothing left to burn away. Every syllable load-bearing, every promise without alloy. The psalm does not end with the wicked silenced; they still walk on every side.
