Psalm 84: The Sparrow Who Found Her HomeOf all the images in the Psalter, few are as tender as this: a sparrow nesting in the altars of God. Not an eagle, not a lion — a sparrow, the most common and overlooked of creatures, has found her home in the most holy place. And the psalmist envies her. "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God." There is a physical ache in these words, a homesickness so deep it reaches the body. The sons of Korah knew something that most of us spend our lives learning: that the deepest human desire is not for comfort or success but for a place where we belong. And then that astonishing line — "I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness." To stand at the threshold of the right house is better than sitting at the head table of the wrong one. Between these longings lies the valley of Baca, the valley of weeping, which the pilgrim passes through and somehow transforms into a well. The tears become springs.
