PSYCHIATRY: Defense Mechanisms

from Beyond the Pearls: Cases for Med School, Residency and Beyond · host Raj Dasgupta & MedPrepToGo

Today's Episode Alexandra reviews chapter 2 from the Psychiatry Morning Report book. A 34-year-old male with a history of hypertension and anxiety presents to the emergency department (ED) accompanied by his wife. He complains of abdominal pain from an injury to the right upper quadrant of his abdomen secondary to a pellet gunshot. He is tachycardic but otherwise hemodynamically stable. The ED physician is suspicious that this may have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man smells of alcohol and does not provide much information about how the injury happened. Routine laboratory tests are ordered, and a psychiatry consult is placed. Today's Host Alexandra Myers is a Medical Scribe at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
