Psychological Safety with BACON!

from BACON BITS with Master Happiness · host Master Happiness

Life can be scary. There are so many unknowns - death, disaster, failure, famine, in-laws, and more! Our families should give us comfort, our community should make us feel safe, and our work should make us feel appreciated. We spend so many hours of the week, so many weeks of the year, and so many years of our life working; why work somewhere where you don’t feel safe? A Harvard Business Review study shows that 58% of employees trust strangers more than their own employers. That means that almost 6 out of every 10 employees would rather gossip to strangers about work issues than discuss them with the only people who can fix them. When I quoted this number to random people, the answer was usually, “Yep, that sounds about right.” OMG! Not only is this a very sad statistic, but it’s even worse that so many people are not shocked by it! The lack of Psychological Safety is something that must be addressed by every company that desires success. I believe that the percentage is highest in larger companies. Smaller companies have less layers of management, so humanity is more apparent and communication between levels is less buffered. Why does this happen B - Blame is Common Practice. A - Afraid to be seen in a negative way. C - Can’t admit defeat. O - Only Losers Ask for Help! N - Never Fail Attitude. What can you gain out of increased Psychological Safety B - Better Performance  A - All-4-1 and 1-4-All Attitude! C - Concerns Uncovered and Corrected O - Opportunities Appear N - New ideas Emerge How to Increase Psychological Safety B - Being WRONG ain’t BAD A - Ask Lots of Questions! C - Collaborate to get Answers O - Open Minds to All Ideas N - No Titles During Discussions Successful teams thrive on Communication and survive on Trust, so always listen to opinions, but don’t always take the advice.
