Pubcast 60: Casino Royale (part 1)

from Pubcast Hosted by Brendan ONeill

The name's Bond. James Bond. Shaken, not stirred. Allison, Eric and Ian join me to break down my favorite 007 movie, Casino Royale. It's Daniel Craig's debut, and sees the franchise return to its more gritty, less jokey, roots. This is the first part of a two-part episode, and includes a fun, crazy game of "Bond Girl Names: Real or Fake?" Check out this episode as a primer for part 2, which will drop very soon.

The pubcast. You're not listening to pubcast. The carorist or winning. That's what James Wilson.

Welcome to the pubcast. Sit down and enjoy your point. Okay, welcome to the Casino Royale episode. This one was a fun one.

It was a long one. It actually ran for like two hours and 45 minutes. So I broke it into two parts. This is part one.

And in this episode we're joined by Ian, first time on the podcast, and Ian Allison and me break down to see the Royale from the standpoint of trivia, what we like, what we don't like, our favorite parts, quotes, lines, all the usual stuff. And for part one we have a new game called Bond Girl Names, Real or Fake, and the game is as ridiculous as the names, so that was fun. Look for that. And we did a lot more trivia than we thought we would.

So this episode ends right after the trivia and right before the recastrobate section or game. So you can find a recastrobate section and also how much are they worth game on part two of this two part episode. So sit back with your vodka martini and get ready for Casino Royale. Your file shows no kills, Bond.

But you become a double-oh. You text two. How did you die? Your contact?

Not well. You need money. The second is... Yes.

Inciderably. The man is a chief private banker to the world's terrorists, which would explain how he could set up a high-stakes political game at Casino Royale in Montenegro. If he loses this game, he'll have nowhere to run. He'll have the best player in the service.

The treasury has a great stake in the game. But if you lose, our government will have directly financed terrorism. I will be keeping my eye on our government's money, and I'll feel perfectly formed now. You noticed.

My whole-bar-lute game is in causing you to perspire. It doesn't bother you, killing those people. Well, I wouldn't be very good at much other than dead. How's our girl?

Melted your cold heart yet. James, get the girl out. You're not going to hurt me in there. It's got your armor back on.

I have no one on left. Whatever is left of me. Whatever I am. I'm yours.

The only question remains... will you yield in time. All right. Casino Royale came out November of 2006.

I always start out with the No Nonsense plot. This is what I get from IMDb, and it's usually the driest, most possible driest, no-nonsense, nothing description of the movie. This one's actually relatively accurate. The last one we had...

It was like one sentence of... Yeah, it was per point break. It didn't even mention skydiving. It was just terrible.

It tells you everything and nothing. Nothing. Yeah. Well said.

After earning 00 status, status, and license to kill, Secret Agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as of 00. Or as 007. One must defeat a private banker funding terrorist in a high stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montanegril. Okay, sure.

It's better than most. That's it. That's it. That's all you know.

That's kind of the joke at this point. It tells you everything and nothing. Yeah. Okay.

Yeah. That's the movie. But why would I want to see any of that's like a hundred thousand foot view? That's right.

So this was 2006. What was your overall reaction to the movie? Where and when did you see it? What impact did it have?

I mean, I was, and you are an Eric, you are a Bond fan, Gold Time. And I think most of us were waiting for the next Bond. It had been... When this came out, it had been four years since the last game.

What was the previous one? 2002? So Pierce Brosnan had a run of four movies. Gold 995.

Tomorrow Never Dies 97. Terrible. The world is not enough in 99 Terrible. It was 2002, die of the day horrible.

The cello player was the Bond girl and they ride the... Yeah, that's not what they ride the cello case. Oh my god. I don't even remember that.

That was too many dollars. Oh, thanks. Die Another Day is when he pairs sales on the tidal wave. Yes.

He sells on the tidal wave. Bad CG. That's when the guy has the giant laser from space that melts the polar caps. That was 2002.

That's why it sounds like that Val Kilmer movie. Yes. Yeah. It's like real genius was more believable.

Yes. So there was Lazlo at that. That's what we all wanted to know. Lazlo as James Bond.

As long as cute. Take it Eric. So this is four years after. I know I was fired up.

I was working in the field for a packaging magazine when this came out. And I was fired up for it. I remember watching clips and trailers and whatever. While I was doing my editing and stuff.

I never seen it. And we saw it first weekend or about. Yeah. I know.

I remember you being excited about it. I don't remember having any sort of looking forward to it other than it's a getting out of the house with. This is kind of the James Bond that Ian Fleming wrote was like this sort of. Dark character.

Yeah. The kind of went from the more the light hearted. Yeah. Roger Moore and some of the other ones.

Not a bunch of gadgets. Not a bunch of quippy one-liners. No, that's no. Yeah.

Yeah. Eric, what about you? I know you were like an infant when you saw this, but you know. I did not see it in the theater.

How dare you? I did rent it was the first time I saw it. Yeah. I remember being I remember being excited about it.

And I heard going into I was very excited. I can't remember why I ended up not seeing it. I was in college at the time. I might have done it.

But yeah. So when they started working on this movie. Apparently Pierce Brosnan thought he was going to be in it. Like he thought he would continue to be bond.

He wanted to be bond. And he was too old. He was 53. And this is bonds first adventure.

They were resetting bond. You can't be 53. Yeah. Because what's the second one?

Connery. Yeah. He was much later in age when he was his last movie. Yeah.

But this was sort of like a not an origin movie but as close to it. Well, yeah. Because he wasn't slow until. Well, so this is the first book that was written.

This is James Bond's origin story. The first book was written. But they made Dr. No.

Here's which was the seventh book. That was the first movie. It's six movies of Bond growing into the guy who was in Dr. No.

Yeah. So a younger, grittier bond who hadn't yet become double all that stuff. So Pierce Brosnan was like, yeah, let's go. I can't wait.

We're not going to do that. And it would have cost, they had to, would have had to pay Brosnan $30 million to do this. You're too expensive and you're too old. So we're not doing it.

And he was like shocked and pissed. Yeah. Well, I feel like Pierce Brosnan. He was believed to be or was going to be James Bond for most of the peak of his career when he should have been James Bond.

Yeah. But they were just talking about it. He never was. And so he started it almost on the tail end of when he should actually be playing James Bond.

That was more contractual. I think right. He was remaking steel and couldn't become bond. Right.

Yeah. So I just checked it. So Connery was 32 and he did bond the first time in 53, we didn't hit the last time. Yeah.

You count never say never again. We have like a break when he did bond at the very end. I think he was even maybe a little bit. But Roger Moore, when he was doing his last bond or two, didn't look as old as Connery because he had the wig.

The bad two pay. But Roger Moore was even older than Connery was for a couple of years. Yeah. Roger Moore, I think his last one is 57.

Yeah. So in the books, I don't know if they say this sincerely, but in the books and even the movies for the most part, Bond is always between 38 and 48. It's called 50. You can't be starting off as the new guy at age 53.

Sorry, Pierce. You've done. I mean, you have to play James Bond. I'm fine.

Let's do that. Yeah. I'd have to do it this year. Flash forward.

Maybe I can do it. That's to me. That's what we'll get there when we get there. But that's why I think he's done.

You can't do it. You can't start when you're 50. Right. I would have had him do it 10 years ago.

He's got too much of this though. Not that he'd have a goatee as Bond. But you know, all right. So 2006.

Casino Royale was the number nine movie at the box office. It made 167 million. The highest grossing Bond movie ever at that time. I think it was just surpassed by Skyfall.

You know, four years ago, whatever it was. You want to go right down to the other? Just for inflation. Sure.

Yeah. Because the movies in the 70s are not how you compare those to now. So I think so. Yeah.

So you're ready for the other box office performers? The top 10. It's not quite the who's who of 92. We did.

So sometimes we'll go through this list and. 91 and 92 are like murderers role of movies. Like arguably best movie years ever. And then the fourth was the same.

When we had it for we had a Terminator, we had 84 was a month or two. So eventually we're going to do a podcast where we just pick a year or do like a. An NCAA bracket of movie years versus movie years because there are some 82 is a huge one. So this year, number one, Pirates of the Caribbean, there's men's chest.

The second one. I don't know the names or order of any of those. And there's a lot of them. Yeah.

And they're terrible. Yeah. Number two cars. Number three, X man.

The last stand. Yeah. Number four, the Da Vinci code. Number five, Superman returns.

Number six, I say to the meltdown. I say to. No, no, no, no. Seven happy feet.

Number eight over the hedge. That's one, two, three, four animated movies in the top eight. Cucino Royale, number nine. Number 10.

Taladega nights. That is a terrible year. It's a terrible year. It's a terrible, terrible year.

Wow. That's a 16 seat in the list. Yeah. 2020 is going to win it because we didn't have any movies coming out of here.

Right. Okay. All right. The Rotten Tomatoes score for.

It's in a rail. Okay. We've got the audience score and the critics score zero to 100. Yeah.

So we always say, we always think the audience score is more than the critics. I think more than half the time, more than three quarters of the time, we are wrong. So we don't know what we're talking about. Right.

There's, yeah, there's no logic to it that we would like to. What do you think the audience score is for Rotten Tomatoes? I'm going to say 90. 90.

93. Yeah. The audience gave kissing a real 89. I win.

I'm surprised it's below 90. Yeah. I never, yeah. The critics.

We can put it around. I'm going to, I believe that they will have liked it and I'm going to stick with 90. Eric. I'm going to adjust a little bit.

I'll say 85. 85. Ian critics. I'm going to say 78.

Wow. The critics gave. Scenario 95 percent. That's what I get.

That's what I get. That's really, that's really, that's really cool. I was reading a little bit that it was really well received. I didn't look at like the scores or anything like that, but the fact that it wasn't as campy as the others was what the critics really liked.

Yeah. The blonde bond. Yes. Okay.

Now we're going to do a left turn and do a new game that's going to be, we're going to call it bond girls real or fake, something like that. So I'm going to give you guys a choice of three bond girl names and you have to tell me which one's fake. Eric and Ian are going to get most of these. Yeah.

Yeah. So I think you should, yeah. I think you should guess first. You should guess first.

Okay. Now, I think the fake names are just as ludicrous as the real name. So I think it'll be good. But if you know bond a little bit, you should know most of these names.

All right. 75% you should get. All right. Ready?

All right. Pick the big name Miranda Frost and the wet. Tippie case. Save them again.

Miranda Frost and the wet. Tiffany case. The fake one is tippie case. Ian Eric, you think I'm a what?

I'm a what is fake one I think. I almost said it, but then I'm like, you know what, it could just be. Yes. Definitely case.

That's a fantastic terrible bit. Okay. Okay. Kisses is a key.

Plenty of tool. Chesty McGee. I agree. I agree.

Of course. Now when we get further down here, it's not going to seem so crazy. All right. Okay.

Already. I only knew that because that McGee is like almost always a fake thing for you. Okay. Okay.

Pick the fake name. Sylvia trench. Poon tang. Pussy go.

Dang. Poon tang. Of course. Some of these are layups.

Oh my God. What was the one that was the one that was the other one? Sylvia trench. That's a sneaky dirty name.

It's out of nowhere. Yeah. I don't know where it is. I don't know.

Okay. Okay. I don't know. I don't know.

Okay. Okay. Christmas Jones strawberry fields April showers. Christmas Jones strawberry fields.

And April showers April showers. Let's say strawberry fields. Okay. The only one that I think is correct.

The other two were April showers and what April showers and strawberry fields and Christmas Jones. April showers. April showers. That's it.

That's it. Starry fields is quantum of solace. I think that's crazy. That's Gemma art to run.

That's interesting. That's the red head. It's got to be red. Okay.

Pick the fake one. One name only. Vandy flower. Oh crap.

I'm going to say. Oh my God. Forget the movie. I think it was the man with the golden gun.

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah. I forget the movie. I think it was the man with the golden gun. The two, I'm going to call him hench women were Bambian number.

Oh my God. Oh, wow. It's very ridiculous. All right.

Pick the fake. Jen, Rummy, solitaire octopus. You know which one is not, but there's other sort of talk. Jen, Rummy and solitaire.

Yeah. I'm going to say solitaire. You know, Jen, Rummy. Eric.

I'll say Jen, Rummy. Jen, Rummy is a fake. So, there's the real one of the two. I'll say we all know.

What movie is solitaire? I don't think it's a older one. Yeah. Has to be.

I don't have that. It's like a peak knowledge of the movies. I'm going to get some of the other options. But yeah.

All right. Pick the fake. Zenia on the top. Eileen Dover.

Honey writer. Eileen Dover. Ian. Sam again.

Eileen Dover. Zenia on the top. Eileen Dover. Eileen writer.

Eric. Eileen Dover. Yeah. On the top.

That was what was I called? Yeah. Okay. Pick the fake one.

It's the pronunciation. I'm trying to do I say it. But medically like properly or do I say it. To enhance the pun.

That's always the question. Yeah. Yeah. All right.

Pick the fake one. Jenny flex. BB doll. On your knees.

Jenny flex. BB doll. On your knees. On your knees.

That's yeah. That's two on the nose for that. I don't know what that's true. BB doll.

Jenny flex. That's. That's two on the nose for that. I don't know what that's true.

BB doll. Baby doll. Jenny flex. That's like that.

I know. In front of me. Yeah. I mean, some of these made up for movies, but still.

Okay. Eric. All right. Pick the fake one.

All right. Holly. Okay. Pick the fake one.

All right. Holly. Good head. Connie.

Is Mary. Good night. I want it. The fake one to be.

But now I'm not sure. What were they again? Holly. Good head.

Connie. Mary. Good night. I'm going to say.

That feels like it might be pushing it. That's. I'm going to agree. Eric.

I agree. Of course. That's like that. It's going to land.

All right. To more. Pick the fake one. I'ma wait until you.

Right. Chumi. Waylin. Danglin.

Chumi. Chumi. Chumi. Chumi.

Waylin. Danglin. Danglin. I'm going to.

Chumi. Chum. Chinglin. Danglin.

Danglin. Danglin. I'm going to say Danglin. Danglin.

And what was the little one. I'm gonna say dangling Wang. Ian. What was your name?

Whaling. She me. She me. Yeah.

She that was too so. Dang. Yeah. Eric.

Uh, Daling Wang, I guess. I'm going to go. Is the fake one. She me is a definite real.

Yeah. It was an Asian. I believe. Um, so it was.

Who me? Who you? Exactly. How many people do you get to the show?

Uh, exactly. Austen powers is not that far off. Most of the 60's and 70's but. Uh, okay.

Last one. Pick the fake one. Penelope small bone. What?

The rest of this thing is two more. Penelope small bone. Penelope small bone. It's deaf from the broad chest.

Molly Warren Flash. is the winner of this entire group. Who was broadcast? Penelope.

Penelope broadcast. No, Stephanie Brodges, Penelope, small bone. Molly, warm flash. I'm going to say warm flash.

I'm going to say the same. Eric? Yeah, same. This one, I put in a name from this movie we're talking about.

We are talking about, you know, right now, in the car on the way to the hotel when Bond is his orders, he says, his name is Arlington Beach. They get their passports. And her name is Stephanie Brodges. Oh my goodness.

That's in the movie. So it's not that. And Opie Small Bone is a real name of the fake. Or no.

Sorry. Wait. What? I put in a real name.

It's a fake one. Sorry. I put in Stephanie Brodges. That's a real name.

I put in, that's the fake one. What? I fucked up. What?

Yeah. I got to win that right here. I got influenced by the movie. I mean.

It's a real name, but it wasn't a character. Well, perfect. Yeah. They're all real names is the answer.

But Molly, warm flash is a real name. Oh my god. An Opie Small Bone is a real name. And Stephanie Brodges is a real name on a passport.

Oh my god. I forgot what she was looking at. She was a little pissed when Arlene Timbich. Oh, that's right there.

I don't know why Penelope Small Bone tickled my funny bone. It's completely in the way that it did. But it's completely in the way. So as a bonus, this is just, I was trying to figure out if this name was pronouncing it, and it meant something different, but I'll leave it.

Anya on the sofa. That's not the funny part. Her agent name, she's AKA Agent Triple X. Wow.

That's X. From the 60s or 70s or whatever. And I think from one of the first ones, Salater. Yeah.

That was from 1954, a little like that. Yeah, even she said. That's why you said that. So there are a few other names that didn't include, but that covers both of them.

All right. Trivia time. I'm going to throw out just a couple of leaders sort of set the table, and then we can go from there. I'm not going to get into the first book.

The doctor knows the first movie, who cares. I think if you know James Bond at all, you know that it was first, and Casino Royale was first made into a live TV movie in 54 with Jimmy Bond. Played by an American. He was an American guy.

Played by Barry Nelson. It's terrible. There's also a Casino Royale in 1967. It's a satire starring Peter Sellers.

Based loosely on the book, not really. It's kind of weird. I've seen parts of it. It's hard to watch.

It's hard to watch, yeah. OK, I'm not going to go through all this stuff. A little bit of the OK. Chris Cornell song, you know my name.

He produced it with David Arnold, who originally wanted that song to replace the James Bond theme. Totally. That was going to be the song of the James Bond theme song at this point, instead of the famous guitar riff or whatever. And that song was nominated for a Grammy.

All right, Pete, Chris Cornell. It was good. Yeah. And that opening scene with the graphics and the Cino stuff and the vector images and stuff, what am I favorite openings?

I was like that it started in black and white. Yeah. And then it didn't go to college. Yeah.

And also, it is the first one or the only one that does not feature naked women. Because he was not James Bond at the start of the movie yet. So he hasn't gone through his whole man about town. Yeah.

This is fairly well known. It's named a weird. Malacca, the bomb maker at the beginning, who does all the free running parkour stuff. His name is Parkour Parkour.

That is Sebastian Focan, one of the creators of Parkour or the free running thing. He was a creator of it? Yeah, so my question is I have this one too. Did this movie create the explosion of Parkour and free running?

No. Because it wasn't really that well known. Well, I had seen it previously on some discovery special or something before. But the Bond movies are notorious for seeing a trend and then putting it in a movie.

Whatever is hot at the time, they have to just shoot it into the movie. So Parkour was one. Which the opening scene is a main ridiculous thing. It's amazing.

Parkour was big at the time or coming up at the time as a trend and say, put it in the movie. I don't think Pierce Brosman could have come that scene. No. I would have loved to seen Pierce Brosman try and run through that sheet of drywall.

I would have. I wasn't just dented anymore to bounce back. It's funny because I was going to say one of that 45 degree angle cranes. Oh my god.

Just not the thing. The other pop culture things are the trends that the producers saw in the movie include Texas Holdam. That was the game they had instead of Backwrap. Which has been the other raise bonds.

And then the body worlds, the body works. That was a big deal in the first early 2000s. And then they had that in the movie as well. So a little bit on that trivia is that in the movie it takes place in Miami, filmed in Prague in the middle of winter.

Because that's where the exhibit was. So they had to go there in order to film the scene. So that did come to Chicago at some point. Yeah.

It was in Milwaukee too. Was it? Yeah. While filming a fight scene in Prague, the first action scene to be shot, Daniel Craig lost his front to teeth while filming the fight scene and had his dentist fly out from London to her place.

Worse nightmare. That is my absolute worst nightmare. That's why it was missing your teeth. I'm knocked out.

Two teeth knocked out. While in Miami airport, there's a call for flight double seven. I had that one written down. This one's good, I think.

I didn't catch that at all. The number on Demetrios is key ring. And he puts on the poker table. I said 53.

It's 53. It's 53. So Casino Royale, the novel was published in 1953. Casino Royale, the movie, came out in 2006, 53 years after the book was published.

Amazing. Wow. I think that book was 50 years before they made it in the movie. Yeah.

Yeah. Go for it. All right. So I got a couple.

One is that the Asian woman that is sitting at the poker table, Madam Wu, was in The Only Live Twice. She was a girl that set James Bahn's death up. The scene where Daniel Craig stands up and gets up out of the water was often thought to be an homage to Ursula Andress getting up out of the water. But it wasn't.

It was him kind of stumbling on a sand bank and trying to get up. He couldn't get up out of the water. He was supposed to kind of be a little bit more. He couldn't just floating in the water, sort of watching.

And he couldn't. So he had to stand up. He was going to float into the sand bar. Yeah.

And the last one, because running you picked one of mine that I had was that complicated drink that he orders during the poker game that everybody jumps on the bandwagon to order is called a Vesper. Yeah. I didn't realize that. He said it in the movie.

He didn't. Oh, he did. Oh, I didn't pick that up when I watched the movie. I'm like, oh, if that's a real drink, that's incredibly clever.

That drink is in the novel, the book, from 53. When they had Kinilale, alcohol or whatever he mentions. Because back then it had sugar in it, and now it doesn't. So it's only called the le now, but whatever.

So that was it. So we're talking about that was one of my favorite lines that I wrote down. And when he does drink order, it's dry martini, three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of kinolite, shake it over ice, and then add it into slice of lemon peel. Yeah.

I like how Felix says, I mean, I'll have one, but keep the fruit. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, everybody starts ordering it.

I like that Lushie Frot spends like, all right, are we done? Can we come back? Yeah. Yeah.
