What this episode covers
How are we going to endure suffering? Peter is trying to prepare the church to endure to the end. In verse 20, Peter uses Noah as a picture of the antitype. A type is using an example to portray something in the furture to come which is forshadowing the coming of the antitype. For the sake of one man, Noah, God saved him. Noah is an antitype of Jesus -one man who is worthy. In verse 21, baptism forshadows what is to come. The water of flood represented God's judgement. The water of baptism represents a watery grave, not washing. Baptism portrays your declaration that you are claiming the victory of the resurrection in my life. Salvation is a very private, personal commitment to surrender your life. In verse 21, baptism is an answer out load in public of a good conscience. If Jesus has cleansed your heart, it is going to come out. You are going to share and tell people. What's your answer after what He has done for you? This is who I am and I want everyone to know it. 1 Corinthians 15:29. What happens to those who believed but do not have time to be baptized or died on the cross next to Jesus? (Baptism for the dead). We get to participate in something greater than Noah who was saved in the flood. The antitype is greater than the type. The focus of baptism is the resurrection.
