Hailing from the small village of Mian Kot in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, Ajay Deep Singh began his sporting journey as a runner before moving into wrestling and later training in jujitsu. Now combining those disciplines in the fast-growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Singh has risen to become the second-ranked Amateur Men’s Bantamweight fighter across Australia and New Zealand. As he prepares to enter the Pro league this season, Singh speaks to SBS Punjabi about the chance encounter with a coach that changed his life, the discipline behind his rise in MMA, and what being a “real fighter” means to him. - ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਮੀਆਂਕੋਟ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਪਲ ਅਜੈਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ, ਕੁਸ਼ਤੀ ਤੇ ਜੁਜੀਤਸੁ ਤੋਂ ਸਫਰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੁਣ MMA Pro League ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਦਾਅ ਲਗਾਉਣ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਐਸ ਬੀ ਐਸ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਅਜੈਦੀਪ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਦੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਐਥਲੀਟ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੌੜਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕੁਸ਼ਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੌੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਦੇਣੀ ਆਰੰਭ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਫਿਰ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਲਗਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਖਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਸਦਕਾ ਅਜੈਦੀਪ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ-ਨਿਊਜ਼ੀਲੈਂਡ ਦੇ Amateur Mens Bantamweight ਵਿੱਚ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੰਬਰ ਦੇ ਫਾਈਟਰ ਦਾ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਵੀ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ।
