Although a believer is positionally a "new creation" and a sacred temple for the indwelling Holy Spirit, they are initially left with a corrupted heart (the thinking portion of the soul) that is filled with "stinking thinking" from a lifetime of worldly influences. This internal battleground requires a spiritual metamorphosis through the renewing of the mind, which is achieved by the "washing of water with the word" as the believer adopts a steady diet of Bible teaching. Ultimately, this purification process is essential for a believer to advance from spiritual infancy to maturity, enabling them to practice "pure and undefiled religion" by remaining unstained by the world and maximizing their life for the glory of Christ.
