Pursuing a Eucharistic Marriage in the Midst of Marital Strife (Marriage Unhindered)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

Doug Hinderer, a marriage and family therapist, kicks off another episode of Marriage Unhindered with Greg Schutte, a seasoned expert in marriage therapy. Together, they explore what it means to reconcile difficult marriages and live out a Eucharistic relationship. 💍 Get the whole episode here!   A Eucharistic Marriage   Greg explains that the key to a Eucharistic marriage is grace and sacrifice; just like Christ gives Himself to us in the Eucharist, we are called to give of ourselves to our spouse.  It’s not about happiness; it’s about holiness. 💡 The world says, "Be happy!" But in Catholic marriages, the call is, “Be holy, even if it’s tough." The happiness part? That comes through serving each other, not focusing on what makes you feel good.   Intentional Love... Are You on Autopilot?   They remind us that we often start marriage with all the warm fuzzies: listening, loving, serving. But as time goes on, autopilot kicks in. Intentional love means staying present and engaged, not just going through the motions. 🙏   🙏 The Cross in Marriage   And let's be real; marriage comes with crosses. There’s no easy road to heaven, right? So, when things get rough, it’s not about finding happiness by ditching the spouse who isn’t perfect. It's about working together through those tough times, even if it feels like you’re both walking to Calvary. The culture tells us to prioritize our personal happiness, but Greg says the truth is that selfishness is the killer of joy. The happiest marriages are those where each partner adopts a servant's heart, focused on giving rather than taking.   🎧 Real-life Heartbreak... Callers Share Their Struggles   Two powerful calls come in. Mario from New Jersey shares his heartbreak over a wife who cheated and labeled him as a narcissist, and Troy from California is grappling with a separation due to addiction and past hurts. Both are caught in the pain of broken promises, yet both continue to pray and seek reconciliation. Doug and Greg offer encouragement: sometimes, even in the darkest moments, it’s about reflecting on what you can change within yourself. They emphasize that, no matter the situation, our call as spouses is to strive for the ultimate goal: getting each other to heaven.    💡 Takeaway   Marriage is hard work. It’s messy. It’s painful. But it’s also a profound pathway to holiness when you both commit to walking together, serving each other, and sacrificing like Christ did for the Church. ✝️ If you’re struggling in your marriage, don’t throw in the towel; lean on God, the Eucharist, and keep praying. Keep serving.
