Pushing During Labor

from Birth Healing Summit Podcast · host Lynn Schulte, PT

How do you describe pushing to your pregnant clients? In today’s podcast Lynn talks with birth educator and doula, Chantal Traub, about pushing during labor. Many mom’s don’t want to poop during the pushing phase of labor and therefore tighten their pelvic floor to avoid this. This holds the baby and makes for longer labor. The pelvic floor needs to be able to lengthen in order for the baby to come out. Practicing this through the use of tactile cues is important so the body can instinctually lengthen during labor even if the birthing person has had an epidural. You will want to listen into today’s podcast to learn the tricks that Chantal uses with her clients and teaches in her classes to relax the pelvic floor and allow for lengthening. Be sure to check out Chantal’s Birth Healing Summit interview coming April 2024 on supporting clients in the second stage of labor.Chantal will be joining us for our 10th edition of the Birth Healing Summit which will be focusing on all things pregnancy! In her 20-plus years in practice, she has become internationally acclaimed for her expertise on the pelvic floor and her Pushing Power technique. Early on, Traub identified a severe lack of preparation among birthing people for the pushing stage of labor. She observed that in birth classes, this essential topic was glossed over. Thus began a mission to properly educate and teach birthing moms—and professionals in the field—to better understand the pelvic floor; through her classes, her one-on-one work and her doula practice. Traub speaks often on the subject of pelvic floor health and safe, effective pushing. She is a regular educator for Global Pelvic Health Alliance, American Physical Therapy, New Jersey and My Pelvic Floor Muscles, and has been featured on many podcasts, including Next Question, with Katie Couric and The Women’s Health Podcast. She presented at the Polyvagal Institute Conference in 2022. In recent years, Traub has expanded her training and practice to be able to serve the health needs of women of all ages and at all life stages. Published Co-Author: The Pelvic Floor: Everything you needed to know soonerWebsite: https://chantaltraub.comVisit Institute for Birth Healing to learn more about how to care for the pregnant and postpartum body: CLICK HERE
