Putin Just Erased Russia’s Anti-War Opposition

Putin’s system has moved against its opponents both inside and outside Russia. Russia’s Supreme Court removed Yabloko—the country’s only registered anti-war party—from September’s parliamentary election only five days after it was approved and assigned a place on the ballot. Yabloko had suddenly become a rallying point connecting anti-war Russians inside the country with opposition leaders living in exile. Putin has also signed what Human Rights Watch describes as a “civic death” law targeting Russian critics abroad. The legislation can restrict property rights, freeze assets, block bank access, revoke driving privileges, deny passports and consular services, and make it nearly impossible for targeted Russians to conduct legal business inside their own country. Together, these developments reveal something larger: Putin is attempting to erase organized opposition wherever it exists—inside Russia, outside Russia, and even from the ballot box.
