Q&A #16: Churban, Minhag, "Shmiras Einayim," Sharing Psak, Reading, Feeding Animals 1st, MO Problems

from Machshavah Lab · host Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 21 minutesSynopsis: This morning (1/6/22), in our SECOND Friday Q&A (this one for women only), we took up a bunch of topics which included many subtopics: (1a) What can we infer about the relative importance of bein adam l'makom vs. bein adam l'chaveiro mitzvos from the reasons given for the destruction of both Batei ha'Mikdash? (1b) Which types of lo lishmah mitzvos are acceptable and which aren't? (2) How should we relate to minhagim which feel like cumbersome vestiges of the halachic system? (3a) How can the Torah demand "shmiras einayim" when, statistically speaking, it seems to be an impossible standard? (4a) Are there guidelines for when psak should and shouldn't be shared? (4b) Similarly, are there guidelines for when we should and shouldn't share halachic knowledge with someone who isn't aware of the halacha? (5) What is the philosophical reason for feeding our animals before we feed ourselves? (6) How do I, Rabbi Schneeweiss, curate my reading and watching list? (7) Do the problems in Modern Orthodoxy imply a failure of the entire approach? There might have been more questions, but these are the ones I was able to remember after the fact. If you listen to this and find that I left one out, please let me know!-----מקורות:ב' מלכים כא:א-טזישעיהו א:י-יזרמב"ם - איגרת לקהל מרשילייא על אצטגנינות ומזלספר החינוך - הקדמהרמב"ם - ספר המצוות, לא תעשה מ"זדברים לב:מזירושלמי פאה א:אר' צבי שכטר - מפניני הרב, עמוד רעב-רעגרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות יא:דThings I Recommended:- "Chametz - Why So Serious?" https://kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/2016/04/chametz-why-so-serious.html- "Lishmah and l'Kanter" https://kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/2019/06/lishmah-and-lkanter.html- "Shechem: A Bad Place (Rabbi Elie Feder)" https://www.buzzsprout.com/1850974/11947146- The Stoic Jew Podcast (1/15/21): "Seneca - Letter #2: On Discursiveness in Reading" https://www.buzzsprout.com/1478911/7284784- Timothy Ferriss, "Tribe of Mentors"- Tim Ferriss, "Tools of Titans" -----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Rachayl as a "thank you" to me for teaching, and as a "thank you" to all those who participate in my shiurim and share their thoughts and questions.-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you!
