Sin embargo, ¿Qué es "Occidente"? ¿Es algo que exista realmente? ¿ es un mito, oscuro y confuso, que encubre la hegemonía imperial de Estados Unidos en particular, y del mundo anglosajón en general, junto a naciones que fueron potencia colonial como Alemania y Francia, sobre el resto del mundo? ¿Han impuesto estas naciones una suerte de cánon civilizatorio sobre las demás, expulsando o no del mismo a las que convenga? ¿Es lo mismo "Occidente" que Cristiandad o "Área de difusión griega"? ¿Lo grecorromano y lo judeocristiano son la base de "Occidente'o estos dos elementos, en mayor o menor grado, pueden encontrarse en otros lugares geográficos? ¿Qué importancia tiene Lutero y la Reforma Protestante en todo esto? ¿Cómo interpreta Samuel Huntington la idea de "civilización occidental" en su texto "El choque de civilizaciones"? ¿Rusia, China y el Islam tienen poco que ver con lo grecorromano y judeocristiano o no es así?
