Québec General Election Of October 2018 A Panel Discussion

from UCL Institute of Advanced Studies · host UCL Institute of Advanced Studies

The UCL Institute of the Americas is delighted to host an international panel of experts who will discuss the 2018 Quebec election campaign, its outcome and its implications for both Quebec and Canada as a whole. The Quebec general election taking place on Monday 1 October looks as though it could result in a realignment in Quebec politics as the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) led by Francois Legault is running ahead of the ruling Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) in the opinion polls. The Parti Québécois (PQ) is currently some way behind, followed by Québec Solidaire (QS). The QLP led by the current premier Philippe Couillard has 68 seats in the National Assembly, the PQ led by Jean-Francois Lisée has 28 seats, CAQ has 21 and QS led by Manon Massé has 3. If the CAQ maintains its lead in the opinion polls and forms a government it will be quite a departure in Quebec politics. Key issues include the economy and immigration and the TV debates may well play an important part in the eventual result.
