Queer identity, people-pleasing, and finding your voice
from You Need a Coach B*tch · host Chris
This week's episode was inspired by a quote from Alexander Leon that speaks to how queer people come to understand and form our identities. In a tweet from 2020, Leon wrote, " Queer people don't grow up as ourselves, we grow up playing a version of ourselves that sacrifices authenticity to minimize humiliation & prejudice. The massive task of our adult lives is to unpick which parts of ourselves are truly us & which parts we've created to protect us." I think that this can have a profound effect on us, our work, and the way we choose to show up in the world. One of the results of this can be people-pleasing. People-pleasing can be a way to construct an illusion of safety in our lives but also keeps us from finding our true voice. In this episode, you will learn some of the ways I have scrutinized my own thoughts about myself and how it helps me to continue showing up in service to my community. Link to Aleander's tweet.
