Question 57: WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF RELIGION?

from DIALOGUES BETWEEN BUDDHISM AND OTHER RELIGIONS · host Janna Order Monastery

Question 57: WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF RELIGION?Answer: In the beginning, religion served as an explanation for natural phenomena that ancient science could not understand. Rain was attributed to a rain god, wind to a wind god, rivers and mountains to their respective deities, and death to a god of death. Essentially, everything in the world was believed to be governed by Divine Beings. It must be acknowledged that whoever first conceived the concept of gods as answers to all these mysteries was extraordinarily intelligent.Humans, being inherently intelligent and constantly evolving, eventually developed theconcept of a supreme god governing all the other gods of forests, mountains, rivers, and seas. Greek mythology pioneered this idea. At that time, religion functioned much like science, providing answers to humanity’s endless questions, as humans are inherently curious beings. Moreover, the existence of spiritual phenomena, such as occasional interactions with spirits or deities, further reinforced people’s belief in theories about celestial deities. Human intelligence led to increasingly elaborate imaginations of the divine world, gradually building intricate systems of belief that required extensive, specialized study to understand fully. As science advanced, however, it began explaining natural phenomena in entirely new ways that no longer relied on deities. This led to the gradual rise of atheism. Over thousands of years, religion did not contribute to technologicaladvancements, while science, in just a few hundred years, propelled humans into outer space – a highly convincing achievement. Furthermore, religion has rarely produced extraordinary saints, whereas science has given rise to countless great scientists.Perhaps, one day, science will uncover the existence of a divine realm hidden behind all natural phenomena. Initially, rain was attributed to a rain god, but science later explained it as the result of water vapor condensing and falling as precipitation. Who knows, in the future, we might return to the idea that rain is secretly controlled by a higher being in the metaphysical realm. After all, humanity’s exploration of the universe is far from over. #Religions, #Buddhism, #DialogueBuddhismReligions, #Religious, #Buddhist, #Truedharma, #Meditation, #Enlightement, #Buddhatemple, #TheLawofKarma, #BuddhismforBeginners, #Janna, #JannaOrderMonastery,
