Quieting the Mind Part 2: More Applications - Roundtable

from Psychology to Live By · host Dr. Chris Stevens

This Roundtable features the podcast ‘Quieting the Mind: Part 2’ I which examined other ways to develop mindfulness: everyday mindfulness, interpersonal mindfulness, and using mindfulness to increase our emotional intelligence. The discussion that emerged included how we can build the capacity to utilize the 200ms window to ‘reel back in’ our very fast emotional reactions before they  hijack us; how, with much practice, that 200ms period feels ‘longer’  as we develop our metacognitive skills (being aware of our thinking) and that this leads to less identification with our automatic mind; the interpersonally positive effects of being a very present and generous listener and how that creates psychological safety; and  the positive impacts of exercising this mindful ‘super-power’ that is generated by remembering to be kind, attentive and generous.
