R80bn spent, but where are the commuters? SA’s struggling BRT systems spark outrage

South Africans are demanding answers after revelations that nearly R80 billion has been spent on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems over the past two decades, despite relatively low commuter uptake. The controversy gained momentum following concerns over near-empty Rea Vaya stations in Johannesburg, with critics questioning whether taxpayers are getting value for money. Figures discussed on 702 reveal that only around 152,000 passengers use BRT services nationwide, compared to the almost eight million South Africans who rely on taxis every day. Rea Vaya officials insist the project remains part of a long-term integrated transport plan, but with billions already spent and operating costs running into tens of millions monthly, frustration over government spending and failed infrastructure projects continues to grow.
