That's plenty of that. That'll do. That'll do. Welcome.

I mean, hold on. No, that's how not jazzed about this. I am is I barely got into the episode without remembering it. Like I remember too soon about the intro.

This has become the new intro. Me sort of fumbling around and like, oh wait, hold on. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe later on are total recall. Belgium screamers.

Too late. Composter, minority report paycheck, scanner darkly next, screamers the hunting and now radio free album of album move album move. I've been saying out. I take that back.

I've been saying it. I'm just muttering around muttering album. I realize as soon as I said that I was like album move album move as in there's a new album out and it contains subliminal messages. Very good.

Very good. Damn. Yeah, tan. Yep.

Rob. Remember when we started this with Blade Runner? Ah, this is a classic King knee arc. It is gets worse and worse.

Yeah, as time goes on until eventually you're watching Canadian student films all roads lead to Canada. It's true. This is a feels like a feature length dollar baby. So it feels like I had the exact same thought.

There is just a quality to how it shot. It's low quality. Low quality. It's what you're describing.

Luckily there's a lot of, I guess, green screen sort of like have a guy walk in place and have the background move behind him happening. Yeah, luckily. Also, luckily that guy is so weird looking. Our main character guy?

Yes. He is. It's the teeth, I think. He's got the rant teeth.

Kevin Durant. Oh, big old chompers is what you're saying? Yeah. Yeah.

He's got wind up, like those wind up chattering teeth in his mouth. In his mouth. Okay. This guy should be doing comedy, not sci-fi drama.

I, this is a, yeah, it's like a weird student film level movie. And it's full of character actors and like recognizable faces. It's so strange. Not the least of which among them, Alanis Morissette.

That's right. We laughed about this on, what was it? The, yeah, we didn't quite say it. Yeah, we didn't say it.

Do you see who's in this? Yeah. Rich summer. Rich summer is in it for a second.

His partner, John Tenney, I think his name. Also in there for a second. So right off the bat, right? This is based on a book, of course, by Phil K.

Dick called a Radio Free Albumeth. But, and it, it's important to ask to risk on that is that it's posthumously published. It is posthumously published. It is also like, there's a trilogy of like the valus stories, right?

Which this is not a part of seems like this was, because it was released posthumously that it's not considered part of the, like that series of books. Um, but it's, I mean, it's all valus. Uh, it's all just one guy sort of puttering around Venice being like, have you heard this valus thing? It's quite literally, right?

It's like, what year does, what year does Philip K. Dick die? It feels like 80 or I want to say 80. It was like right before Blade Runner.

This is the, this is the work of a man who's been, look, I'm not, I'm not knocking anyone's spirituality or anything. 82. This is the work of a man who's been abusing amphetamines now for 40 plus years. Yeah.

Yeah. This is the ramblings of a mad man. This is like, you know, you know, he loves his alternate history. Yeah.

It's all timelines. This is like an, there's an alternate timeline where he does Scientology. And it's this and it may be it's good. Scientology is good.

You're saying you're well, this is good. Oh, we're all doing Vangless with him. And we all like it. This is like the battle star or not battle star battlefield earth of the Bill K.

Dick world. Yeah. Yeah. And it's, um, this is like, this is good.

I think what's really interesting about making a movie out of this is like Philip K. Dick's like politics that are on display here are pretty incoherent. I mean, I guess I mean, he's just like a libertarian guy, but that is, you know, that raises some, some logical questions or some stuff to work out in there. I wonder what that, like what libertarianism was like back then back when he like wrote this, you know, back, whatever, not, not say that, you know, it's just like hell, like the Republican party and the Democratic party are like very different from what they were 50 years ago and whatever.

Right. So I'm curious what, what he thought was, you know, happening here. It seems like from all of everything that we've seen here is a very anti-authoritarian, right? Anti-state.

Yes. Anti-state. All of that business, which is all well and good, but, um, but the whole communism equals fascism horseshoe there. Yeah.

You know, it's one thing if you want to, you know, take umbridge with the USSR specifically, sure, but as soon as you're like, there's no difference between communists and fascists. Yeah. We're like, well, tons of money resources go into stifling only one of those. So I think the fascists would say there's a pretty big difference for sure.

Yeah. I don't know. I do know that this, um, this movie here, uh, disaster. I mean, I don't even know if you could call it a disaster.

Plus our disaster. If, you know, it doesn't exist, but, um, yeah, it's a disaster in the way that the events of Jurassic Parker disaster, like it's terrible, but it never happened. So it's not that bad, I guess. You know, it's on a production level.

I had to like look it up. Um, it looks like the budget here was about 3.6 million according to IMDB 3.6 million, which, uh, it's not a lot of money. You got to pay your Alana's more sets and what have you the music budget on this is, it seems kind of crazy. Cause again, like your pay for some reason you're paying Robin Hitchcock of the soft boys to do all your music for you.

Do you know who that is? Yeah, a little bit. I know, I know the soft boys. Okay.

Um, they, you know, it's, it's that song that plays in like the opening scene where I want to destroy a song. Yeah. Yeah. That's them.

I, I did. I looked up this, that song and it did sound familiar, but it didn't sound familiar. It did. Okay.

But I couldn't like really place it. Yeah. He's like a minor guy. Yeah.

But he is a guy, like enough of a guy that they're like music by Robin Hitchcock. I'm on pickaxe. What's up? He's got a headlamp on pickaxe.

That's right. And he's also a little boy. Yeah. He's a minor guy.

Uh, uh, but yeah. So that, and yeah, you're, you got to land this more set. You got a bunch of character actors who, you know, know, one person in this is, you know, is particularly expensive, I guess, but animal up. I mean, there's like a real movie in terms of production.

Yeah. Yeah. Sure. I mean, not, do you know what he made at the box office?

Yeah, I did see what he made at the box office. Oh, just shy of 10 K. Yeah. Almost got it, boys.

Almost crossed that line. Also, I'm seeing that Rhino Films is one of the production companies. I wonder if that helps with the music aspect of all this. Rhino, remember Rhino?

Did they eventually just turn into like, I remember Rhino from code eight. Well, of course. We watched on Friday on the bonus show, came me pod. Eric, you know, no, no, no, no, no.

Patreon.com slash K.M.E. pod. Patreon.com slash K.M.E. pod sign up for the five dollar month tier.

You had a bonus show every Friday. You learn all about Rhino. You learn about Rhino. Um, I, I watched an update.

I watched part two, code eight, part two. Mm hmm. Still pretty good. Damn.

One's code eight, part three, dropping. I don't know. Part two just came out this year. It's brand new.

So we got to wait for that one, but, uh, man, this movie, okay, uh, written for the screen and directed by John Allen Simon, uh, three names I can easily pronounce. And it's a good week for you. Yeah. John Allen Simone.

Ah, fuck. Um, this is his one and only directing credit and I say, good move. Mm hmm. Um, did he, um, freaking kill himself or other?

I was trying so hard to pivot out of that and say anything else. Did he, uh, you know, God, I hope he didn't. No, he's a, he's like a film executive. That's why he drink, drink a headlock.

There we go. Make it, make it more Shakespearean. Yeah, yeah. Um, yeah, he's like a, he's like a small time film executive.

So he's, I think he just was like, I'm going to try my hand writing and directing, uh, my favorite libertarian novel, Radio Free Album Move. Oh boy. Uh, that's the other thing. I hate the word album move.

Uh, it is. There's so much like good old fashioned sci fi nonsense in this. Like, I mean, yeah, like even like the name Aram check is so forced, valus, and the fact that it stands for vast active living intelligence system. And this all being underpinned by the fact that Philip K.

Dick was like, I believe in valus. Like, I myself, the guy, the real guy, Philip K. Dick, I had a, uh, I had like a religious experience, a, a, a Gnostic vision where I met valus. Yeah.

So I'm going to write four books about it. Now in, in valus, the novel, the main character who's like the, the PKD stand in his name is Horse Lover Fat. Well, that's pretty cool. I agree.

I wish there would have been someone named that in this that would have felt something. Yeah. What felt something. Yeah.

I mean, this, I mean, right off the bat, the problem with this movie is that nothing happens on screen so much as people just constantly are saying what is happening. Uh, it's too. Can you say that when we only have just having a conversation? Yeah.

And I know how you can say that when we're with Andre kind of why I just don't know how you can say that when we are traded to visual feasts of Gnostic visions of Nick in a funny robe, a Brady, I mean, character. Oh, you mean, God talking to God, AKA Aunt May. Yes, it is on May. You mean when he, uh, he slips into a, uh, an old, like infomercial for spa music?

Yes. I do mean that. What was that, uh, the compilation with like Enya and like, oh, pure moods, pure moods. It looks like a commercial for pure moods.

It's those are his dreams. I'll tell you what I put on pure moods on Fourth of July to calm down. Yeah. It works.

Yeah. No, it's a shit. For sure. Yeah.

Um, getting to hear the song that's like, Hey, oh, yeah. Uh, that song return innocence. It's what it's called. I really only know those songs in the context of the commercial.

So like, yeah, it can only like recite any lyrics that were in the commercial and that's it. Um, I've watched the music video for return innocence recently and it's all just footage of stuff happening backwards. That was that right? Like a flower unblooming.

What? Maybe going, getting sucked up into a lady. A birth in reverse. Sure.

Yeah. An old guy, uh, I don't know, not falling up this stairs. Uh huh. Um, an old.

An old. Uh, so, uh, who's in this fucking thing? Who's not in this? I'm on.

We got it. Shae Wigam. Shae Wigam, our old friend, doing like, okay, so we just saw Shae Wigam in Bad Lieutenant Port of Colen, Orleans. Yeah.

Incredible performance. So like big and funny and fun. Tweaked out and whatever, yeah. And this is like, he's not doing anything at all, I would say.

Yeah, it is just sort of, I mean, it's, uh, it's a major problem with this movie. Is that like, nobody really knows, like this is not, it's not a character movie. I can tell you one thing, like one describing descriptive word about any of these characters. Yeah.

About their personalities or whatever. Like, oh, well, the Filke Dick character, the Shae Wigam character is like super paranoid or whatever. Like that is not there. Because that's the thing, like this all takes place in like the, through the perceptions of, I mean, like the, you know, these are the ravings of a, of a drug-addled man near death.

Sure. Like the source material. Yeah. So everyone has to like very credulously talk about Vailus.

Even his wife is just like, damn, you're crazy, but I love you, babe. Yeah. Yeah. I'll go where you go.

I'll go. I'll go. I'll go. I get it for some reason.

Yeah. For some reason. Yeah. Yeah.

So Shae Wigam play is Phil, which is also Phil K Dick's name. He's the name of Phil K Dick. So he's the name of Phil K Dick. So he's the name of Phil K Dick.

That's right. He did. I love when he's like, I'm working on a new one. It's about what if the non-seize won World War II?

I'm like, I know that. I know that. I'm standing up in the theater. I'm going, I know what he's talking about.

Imagine seeing this in the theater, imagine going to the theater being like, one for radio-free album at least. Yeah. You go to the theater. You go to see it.

They're like, all right. That'll be $9,365. That's a little steeped. Okay.

I really want to see it. Where is everyone? All we have to do is get 1,000 more people in here at $9,364. Yeah.

A last minute second. You know, it's like tickets are not selling Jack the Price's. Or possibly this was screened at an Elmo Draft House and you just can't get out the door for less than that. Probably.

So, should we get placed Phil? You got Jonathan Scarf. What's like Johnny Scarf? Yeah, it looks like a guy.

It looks like a scarf guy. Hey, why do they call you Johnny Scarf? Because he strangles you real good. Oh, shit.

Oh, you once you get a Johnny Scarf, that's it for you buddy. That's like, it's out, right? You don't want a scar from Johnny Scarf. Trust me.

Believe me. You know what a scar from Johnny is? It's a love letter. It's a headlock.

Yeah. It's a headlock from my arm. No, Johnny Scarf here plays Nick Brady's the main character. A record store clerk who record exec.

Yeah. He has visions of Vailus. And of course, Vailus is a, I don't know, a collection of, it's like a hive mind of... It's this higher life form.

Yeah. It's what we call God. And it has a satellite orbiting Earth that's beaming information down into Nick's brain. There's a silver egg in his brain.

Yeah, they put it there. We never see that silver egg. We only hear it. I wonder if it's damaged when they put a bullet between your eyes.

The silver egg, to be fair, it is like a pinial gland thing, right? That's what they're talking about basically. Yeah, yes. Yes.

Which like, dude, people in the 20th century, real freakazoids. A pinial glands? They loved pinial glands. They did.

People loved pinial glands. No one talks about them anymore. You know what? You're right.

They don't... There's this old movie from the 50s or maybe 1960s or early 60s or something. It's a mystery science theater movie, but it's called The Leech Woman. And it's all about this woman who stays young by drinking that sweet pinial juice.

There's also, isn't there like a Lovecraft thing with pinial glands also? I'm sure. Probably. You got freaks.

All these freaks, they loved it. Isn't that where a dream of chrome comes from? Probably. A fresh pinial gland?

The slug lady is drinking it. Yeah. We'll know what comes from the adrenal gland. It's adrenochrome.

Oh. Right. You have to scare a kid and then you get the juice. It's not unlike Dr.

Steem. Dr. Steem. They should have called it that.

They should have called it that. Also Dr. Steem. That's like a...

That's a jig-a-low. That's a guy with powerful haunches. Powerful haunches. Yeah.

You're right. So, Nick, he's getting information from Alien Life Worms. He's got a silver egg in his head. We'll find that out later.

Yeah, we'll find that out later. You got Catherine Winick, who plays Rachel Brady. She kind of looks like an amalgamation. I got hodgepodge of maybe five to ten other actresses.

In certain light, she looks like Scarlett Johansson. Who's the... I'm never going to be able to find you now. But one of the actresses from Game of Thrones...

Was she maybe just on Game of Thrones? Yeah. Oh, no. It's definitely somebody else.

It seems like her calling the fame is a show called Viking. Have you heard of Vikings? I've heard of Vikings. Yeah.

She looks like she would be Nordic. Yeah. She's got blonde hair and blue eyes. Yeah.

Perfect. Who else? We got Scott Wilson as president, Fremont. The fascist president who's been president now for 15 years.

I think they say. The fascist president who's secretly a communist. That's right. Boy.

All right. Boy. Now we're just straight into character actor cameo territory. Like Scott Wilson only pops up as president here.

He probably was filmed for like two days. Yeah. It's all in an office. Like all the footage of him is giving like addresses to the public.

Yes. We've got Julie Warner who as newscaster number one, Julie Warner is like she was in Tommy Boy. She was being in movies. You would recognize her.

But she's in this for like 30 seconds. Yeah. He said Rosemary Harris as the voice of Vailus. May from the Toby Maguire.

Card carrying member of the Pussy Posse coming. Card carrying member of the Pussy Posse Rosemary Harris. Rosemary Harris. She can't stay in the one poker game.

Yeah. She was the craziest one of them all. Okay. He said Rich Somer, John Tenney is the FBI agents.

Joel McKinnon Miller who. The flat top himself. Yeah. The flat top who he plays Scully on Brooklyn 990.

You guys know that. Oh yeah. I forgot about that show. Yeah.

He's the, he's the oaf. Yeah. He's one of the oafs. The noof guy.

And we said Alanis Morissette plays Sylvia or Ramshack. Now, Dan, you know this. So you know, I just riled off like four or five character actors names here. People who have been in a lot of movies and productions and such.

They don't get very much screen time. Any of them. But you know who gets a lot of screen time. Alanis Morissette.

Oh yeah. She's all in on this project. Delivering like a lot of exposition here. She doesn't, she just seemed nice.

As a person? Yeah. Yeah. She's Canadian.

Honestly, like all things considered. All things Canadian. All things Canadian. Good casting in the sense that she has like a real warmth to her.

Sure. You know. Yeah. And she should be leading a Gnostic Christian resistance against the horseshoe theory.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She's in it.

She's in a lot. She talks a lot about. Uh, Vailus is not a term. Inaged to Ryan Reynolds.

I thought they were married. I'm sorry. Engaged? They were engaged.

Oh, they're not married. He's married to someone else. Blake Lively. That's right.

Yeah. Interview handler. Blake Lively. Public statement.

Aficionado. Yes. Yes. Um, yeah.

Alanis Morissette has the honor of saying that Vailus is not a term that Nick made up but something. It's actually what they call themselves and they beamed it into his head. Right. That mattered a lot to me.

Yes. Girl, the little girl version of Jenny from Forrest Gump is in this. I was going to get there. Hand Hall.

That's weird. It is very weird. Um, yeah. The little girl version of Jenny in Forrest Gump who's like, please God, make me bird.

So I got fly far away from here. Yeah. That's the same. She's also, she's also involved in the most like, what we would, the most like, contemporarily libertarian aspect of this, which is like, there's a, a little scare where she tells Philip Dic that she's 17.

He's like, damn, you don't look 17. You tricked me. You tricked me. That's not fair.

Yeah. And then he grabs her driver's license and it says that she's 23 and he's like, whoa, that was a close one. He's like, yeah. So, you know, God is a higher being and we are all one with it, but here on earth, women lie, they will lie to you about the day to extort you control you.

Um, yeah. So, Hand Hall and her like partner in this will, uh, Roth, Roth, Roth, Roth, Roth, Roth. Ashley Green is in this, Ashley Green plays a delivery girl. She, uh, I guess she's like most popular from like, uh, the Twilight movies.

She's in those, but she's like, she's another actress who like, uh, just like, I don't know, just a face pops up. Uh, I want to talk about this. Uh, Dr. Weinberg played by Richard Cox.

We've watched a movie with Richard Cox this year. Cruising. No way. He's like the, the main, like the killer, the guy that, you know, ends up taking out like that tall, like you.

And he's like the, like the end scene, like the, when they're when they're in the playoffs. Yes. Yes. Really?

Yep. Wow. Yeah. I know.

Huh. I'm having to say about it. There he is. Yeah.

He's back. Yeah. And then just right at the end there, you got, uh, Frank, uh, Calliendo. Uh, Colson, Colson, um, who we saw him in the Twin Peaks episode where they went to that clubhouse and the bad Cooper had to arm wrestle that guy.

He was, he was the guy with like, he's like the weird looking dude who gave the rules. He's like, right. And he, buddy loses an arm wrestle and much to this guy. You got to join the gang.

If you, I knew he looked familiar. I could not place it. Yeah. Wow.

We were just talking about that scene. Yeah. Like very recently, I guess it's never far from our thoughts though. Yeah.

His character on Twin Peaks is muddy. Is his name? That's it. Yes.

Muddy. Um, this other guy too, Joseph Reitman is a guy. He's like a character actor face pops up in a bunch of shit. No relation.

No relation. Um, I don't think so. That's, yeah. I don't know, I don't know.

I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know, I don't know.

I'm married to Shannon, Shannon Elizabeth. Really? Yeah. And portrays a caveman on the guy, Coco commercials.

Um, so all right. What the fuck is this movie about? Dan, it's about people. It's really very simple sitting around talking the entire time in different locations, but talking nonetheless.

Telling, not showing. Yeah. up the record shop trying to convince his dad, it seems like the owner of the record shop to start selling CDs. He's like, no, trust me, vinyl is the future.

And someday this whole thing will be yours. The music industry will continue to exist unabated. And then you and Rachel, your wife, will be set. Yes.

That night, they're laying in bed, Nick Sters. He sits up and he sees himself standing at the foot of the bed. Yep. Sort of glitchy.

It's like a hologram. He's like, huh? It's like, oh, whoa. And then Rachel wakes up.

She's like, whoa. Yeah, she sees it too. She's like, I love him now too. I love two men.

They're both my husband. And yeah, so she's like, for no particular reason, she's just kind of the next day, right? Like Nick is going to see his friend Philip K. Dick.

Yeah. And Rachel is like, do me a favor. Don't tell Philip K. Dick about what happened last night.

He'll just write it into one of his, you know, it's like he'll egg it on. I guess he's a weirdo. He's a space cadet. And then they say, okay, and they never talk about it again.

And then we get to go about our lives. Yeah. This, it's, I mean, the way that you're describing this is how the whole movie goes. It's like, and then, and something happens, and then he goes and he talks about it to Philip K.

Dick and. And Phil K. Dick basically is just like, you know, that all sounds correct to me. Yeah.

Yeah. Probably. Yeah, he's always just like, ready to, he's like, well, probably that was you from a parallel dimension. If we, yeah, I'm completely certain of this.

All that's there's no, um, so here's the thing with this movie. There's no conflict. It's funny being the same movie where the main character gets shot in the head. Yeah.

No, I know, but like this, it really felt a lot like a scanner darkly, in a way, where it's just like people sitting around and like talking, but scanner darkly has stuff to it. It also has a very distant visual style that like, I mean, this does do in the sense that like, if I see something that looks like this, I know to turn it off. Yeah, of course. Or I know that like, I'm watching what might become soft core pornography.

Yeah. This is like, this not film or something. Um, no, but like the way that scanner darkly is like, it's a lot of people sort of sitting around and like having, you know, nothing sort of conversations. All of these conversations are all like, what would have valus tell you this time?

And that, but everybody's taking everything like very seriously. There's never a question like, like you're saying like, Philip K. Dick is like, uh, oh yeah, that was probably, you know, it could have just been like an alternate universe version of you that was trying to, you know, make contact. That's probably what was going on.

And you're just like, well, why was that probably what was going on? Right. You're just a, you're a sci-fi writer. Yeah.

You're an authority on this because you make stuff up for a living. Exactly. Um, also like his wife, uh, what's your name? Rachel?

Yeah, I think so. Rachel. Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. There she is.

She is so inconsistent from moment to moment. Like, but I feel like every, there's no consistency in the story. Like what is she supposed to be doing during this? You're right.

I mean, there's no consistency in it. You know how Philip K. Dick seems to loathe women here and present that they exist? Yeah.

Yes. I think this is a classic case of that where he's like, he, she vacillates between being a shrew who just wants to stifle his connection to Vailus. Yeah. And like an unwavering supporter of his like genius and success.

Yeah, that's, you're, yeah, you're right. It's like an emotional, uh, Madonna horror complex. Uh huh. You know, yeah.

Hmm. Not great. It's like great. Um, but yeah, it's kind of her role is like, she's like, oh, this Vailus shit, this Vailus shit.

I'm sick of hearing about this Vailus shit. And then when he's like, we have to move to Los Angeles to, uh, because Vailus told me to go there and, uh, join a record label. She's like, got it. Got it.

Actually, she's like, well, you know, there is a conversation between her and Phil K. Dick, which like, could you imagine like this, the conversation between them? We're sort of like set up to think that like, Phil and Rachel have this like friendship. Yeah.

And he's just like giving absolutely nothing. She is too in a different way. But so when she's like, I'm pregnant, right? I have to go with him.

I'm pregnant. Uh huh. And he like, you know, puts an arm around her shoulder. I was like, I don't care about either of you people.

I don't care. Yeah. I don't care what happens at all. Uh, I just sent you an IMDB link to Natalie Dormer.

Yes. To Natalie Dormer. This is the other person that I thought that she looked like Rachel. Um, I see it.

I see it. I just sent you a link to, uh, the Wikipedia page for Christopher Dorner. No reason. It is sent it.

Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. So looking at that.

Um, yeah. So she has to go with him on his, his vision quest because she's pregnant with his child. I, I'm telling you, if I found out, but this is, this is me, I'm small-minded, right? How do you not just leave this man?

100% possibly not carry the baby to turn far being for me to tell someone to do what to get an abortion. Yeah. Maybe get the abortion. This just everybody should get an abortion.

More of a crazy baby in you. Yeah. You can't have that. Yeah.

It could grow up. It could be a screamer. We don't know. All right.

We don't know. We don't know. These women, pregnant with screamers. We got little screamers grown in though.

Very sharp teeth. Let's enjoy this for the next month and a half while it's still funny. Um, yeah. So she, she goes with them to LA.

Um, then sort of we are told in voiceover from Phil that nothing happens in the meantime. He's just like, I'm gonna just kind of kept the red my novels. I just, yeah. Yeah.

Shave my voice. I'm sorry. Funnily found an audience and it was terrific. It was like, over a year before I finally made my way to the LA to go see them.

And then when they show up Rachel's driving a goddamn beamer, which also gets remarked upon, or he's like, oh, how about that? And I never thought I'd see the day old socialist like he was driving a beaver. Yeah. Yeah.

And we all laugh. And we all laugh. We learn that. Yeah.

Nick's been very successful at the record label as though there's just like a pipeline from record store clerk to executive to a and R guy. Yeah. That's very strange. But he's like producing albums, etc.
