Good morning.West Virginia has been identified by federal health officials as one of the primary states linked to a growing, multi-state outbreak of a severe foodborne illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the Mountain State has seen up to eighty cases of cyclosporiasis since the middle of June. Health officials warn the stomach parasite is typically spread through contaminated water or fresh produce, including lettuce. The Food and Drug Administration is actively investigating local produce items and the locations visited by infected individuals. State health departments are urging residents to practice rigorous handwashing and to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables before eating them.In environmental news, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has stepped in to order immediate repairs at a major construction site in Mason County. State regulators have ordered the company building the Monarch Data Center to repair its stormwater controls after nearby residents were hit by severe runoff and flooding. According to state officials, this is the second time since construction began this year that runoff from the development has flooded neighboring properties. Under the state’s emergency order, the Monarch Cloud Campus must immediately reinforce its failed stormwater systems and take direct action to prevent future runoff.Meanwhile, a major injection of federal funding is on the way to help address critical healthcare staffing shortages in rural West Virginia. Governor Patrick Morrisey’s office announced that the federal government has allocated one-point-eight million dollars to the state’s Rural Health Transformation office. The funding will be used to establish dedicated pools of healthcare professionals who can step in to cover rural medical facilities on a short-term basis, with the long-term goal of stabilizing the state’s rural medical network.And a tragic workplace accident in Marshall County has left a telecommunications worker with severe injuries. Authorities report that a thirty-two-year-old worker was in a bucket truck installing fiber internet lines when he accidentally made contact with an energized utility line.
