Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed off on two major pieces of legislation designed to expand career training opportunities and strengthen the state’s skilled labor pipeline. During a special ceremony at New River Community and Technical College, Morrisey emphasized that the measures will rapidly connect residents with fast-tracked, career-focused training programs specifically tied to high-demand technical and medical fields.Turning to federal courts, a former Boone County Commission employee has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison on child pornography charges. Federal prosecutors say a law enforcement raid on a Madison home belonging to Gregory Neal Hager uncovered an external hard drive containing illicit images and videos captured from Snapchat conversations with a minor. Hager was a active systems administrator for the county commission when he was arrested, and previously served as a volunteer firefighter in Danville.In Beckley, a Charleston man is heading to federal prison for nearly eight years for dealing methamphetamine. Emmanuel Covington was sentenced following a guilty plea for distributing more than five grams of meth to an undercover confidential informant. Court documents note Covington has an extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for domestic battery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.Up in the northern panhandle, a Marshall County man remains jailed after allegedly firing over a dozen gunshots directly into a local residence. Police arrested Matthew Horn following the targeted shooting earlier this week. Investigators confirm that while multiple occupants were inside the home at the time of the gunfire, fortunately, no injuries were reported.Meanwhile, educational leadership is changing hands in Putnam County. The local school board has officially named Bruce McGrew as the next superintendent of Putnam County Schools. McGrew will take over the role on July first, replacing long-time Superintendent John Hudson, who is retiring after a distinguished forty-two-year career in public education.And finally, three talented Ohio Valley middle schoolers are celebrating this morning after wrapping up a historic run at the ninety-eighth annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
