Carrying weighted backpacks to symbolize the gear carried by rescue workers, cadets are climbing the campus steps alongside local law enforcement and the Riverside High School band to pay tribute to the three-hundred-forty-three New York firefighters who lost their lives in twenty-zero-one.In national news with deep West Virginia roots, a new federal law will establish a national monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., honoring Medal of Honor recipients. Named in memory of West Virginia native and World War Two hero Hershel "Woody" Williams, the privately funded monument will stand near the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate the bravery of Medal of Honor recipients throughout American history.In Southern West Virginia, Logan County school officials have announced that fire-damaged Logan Elementary School will remain closed permanently. Following a severe fire last February, district leaders determined repair costs far exceeded insurance coverage. The school board will submit a proposal to the State School Building Authority in November seeking funding to expand Logan Middle School to permanently accommodate elementary students and add a new S-T-E-M lab.In Jackson County, nearly five-hundred aviation enthusiasts gathered at the Jackson County Airport for the fourth annual Yeager Fest and General Chuck Yeager Aviation Day.
