Raiders QB Battle: Mendoza’s Long Road | Las Vegas News

The Raiders’ preseason finale ended in a 12-18 loss to the 49ers, but the real story? The QB battle. Coach Klint Kubiak won’t name a starter yet — and that’s smart. Rookie Fernando Mendoza showed promise but needs more reps; his development is a long-term project. Veteran Kirk Cousins will start Week One. Mendoza’s got a stronger arm, but the offensive line struggles when he’s under center, and the offense isn’t built to support a rookie just yet. The front office brought in talent like Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty, but the receiver corps still needs work. Letting Mendoza learn behind Cousins is the right move — patience pays off.
