Ramaphosa says new technology and creative ways are needed if pit latrines are to be eradicated

SAfm — President Cyril Ramaphosa says current models of sanitation are expensive, they require large scale networks of infrastructure and use high energy budgets. Ramaphosa was speaking at the launch of the Sanitation Appropriation for Education Initiative in Pretoria. The initiative seeks to eradicate pit latrines in the country's schools and save lives following a series of deaths involving children using these latrines. Ramaphosa says innovative measures and new technologies should be at the centre of abolishing these latrines. Meanwhile NGO Equal Education says it is disappointing and ironic that government is wasting taxpayers' money appealing the #FixTheNorms judgement that set the deadline for government to fix school infrastructure, including toilets.
