Ramon Cortines has served as chancellor of the New York public school system since 1993. Before accepting this position, he had been Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs in the U.S. Department of Education during the Clinton Administration. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has taught and held administrative positions in virtually all levels of the public school system. He served as Superintendent of Schools for the Pasadena Unified School District, for the San Jose Unified School District, and for the San Francisco Unified School District. Before joining the Clinton Administration, he was a consultant professor at Stanford University, serving as Associate Director of the Pew Charitable Trust Forum on School Reform.
