Rancid Grace

from Open House Church Sermons · host KJ Tromp

Two men pray at the temple, but the respectable Pharisee trusts his goodness while the corrupt tax collector asks God for mercy. Jesus says the tax collector goes home forgiven, exposing more than ordinary pride: claiming to deserve God's acceptance rejects grace completely. Religious discipline and pride in being honestly flawed can both become reasons to feel superior. Jesus' death and resurrection make forgiveness completely free, so seeing God's holiness should uncover sin, renew dependence, and replace self-righteousness with humble joy. Bible Reference: Luke 18:9–14 Preacher: KJ Tromp
