Dr. Buth earned a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from UCLA, and has become a recognized voice in the academic field of biblical studies, linguistics, and discourse analysis. He worked in Bible Translation with the Summer Institute of Linguistics and the United Bible Societies. He is the founder and director the Biblical Language Center and the Vice-President of the Institute for Biblical Languages and Translation in Jerusalem. He is the author of Living Biblical Hebrew for Everyone and more recently co-edited The Language Environment of First Century Judaea: Jerusalem Studies in the Synoptic Gospels—Volume Two, and is a pioneer in the use of second language acquisition methods to study biblical languages.
