Randy Manner: Former US Army General on Donald Trump's threats to end Iranian civilisation

from The Mike Hosking Breakfast · host Newstalk ZB

Iranians are forming human chains around the country's power plants as Donald Trump warns a whole civilisation will die tonight.  The US President's given Tehran until midday to lift the blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.  Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says 14 million people have declared they'll sacrifice their lives defending Iran.  Former US Army General Randy Manner told Mike Hosking members of the US military are also worried for their own safety.  He told Mike Hosking Donald Trump’s threats to end Iranian civilisation were “very disheartening and disconcerting,” and he hoped cooler heads would prevail.  “Those are the kind of words you typically hear from war criminals, not from the leader of the alleged free world.”  He says he has regular conversations with many active duty generals and admirals, and "none of them think that [Trump] is some brilliant tactician".  “Instead, they are very, very concerned about the lives of our military members and, of course, the fact that we have expended nearly two years' worth of munitions in only one month. That means they're not there to protect the United States or our allies in any kind of a broader conflict.”  He says if the President orders US forces to attack civilian targets, that's illegal under military law, US law and international law.   LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
