She also manages patients in the medical intensive care unit with acute respiratory failure caused by asthma, pneumonia, COPD, and the acute respiratory distress syndrome, as well as other conditions such as gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diabetic ketoacidosis, and shock from sepsis, hypovolemia, and heart disease. Dr. West also serves as the associate program director of the Johns Hopkins Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program and plays an active role in recruitment of new fellows and mentoring fellows in the division.
