Dwa obrazy Jana Matejki: "Rejtan. Upadek Polski" oraz "Batory pod Pskowem" zostały wywiezione z Warszawy we wrześniu 1939 roku. Przez pewien czas znajdowały sie pod opieką Kacpra Michalskiego, który był majordomusem Prezydenta RP. Obrazy przetrwały wojne, ale ich opiekun zginął w Katyniu.
