Today’s edition is most meaningful to me personally, as I have had the זכייה to know Rav Trenk zl ever since I was a child, and, more recently, spent 4 summers together with my family as next-door-neighbors to the Trenks.The following text and subsequent pdf document [see WhatsApp group] are of a revised and redacted version of the original tribute which I wrote in memory of our beloved Rebbi, which was published in the Yated Ne’eman on the occasion of his first yahrtzeit, Sivan 5780.יהי זכרו ברוך!!------------------------------------------הוא היה אומרThree Words. THE words that perhaps come closest to defining a man whose greatness is beyond definition. Expressed tearfully by his eldest son at his levaya, the Three-Word-הספד, borrowed from a term used repeatedly in מסכת אבות, is contextually explained to be referring to what a man’s essence, as opposed to his words, would say: הוא היה אומר - his very being, completely and altruistically devoted to nothing other than Divine Service in its purest form, was the sole source of his inestimable impact. Always who he was, not merely what he said. The supremely unique personality of Rav Dovid Trenk ZTL constitutes a study in contrasts. In the opinion of this writer, acquired greatness can be measured only by the means of maintained balance. Even should one profess excellence in a particular trait of fine character, or in an area of meritorious practice, such prowess cannot be independently identified as either divinely gifted or laboriously acquired. It is only when one’s character or personality incorporates such opposite extremes of meritorious behavior, to an extent that would seem paradoxical or even contradictory, that it is infallible proof of self-achievement in character refinement.Hence; in our Rebbi we saw a man who:- Would act (appropriately) silly with a three-year-old girl, even going so far as to loyally follow her instructions as to the proper way to sing her favorite song (“no webbi, not like that; you hafta scweam”, and scream he did), for the sole purpose of delighting and amusing the girl and her parents;and yet also vividly and tearfully describe the horrors suffered by our forebears at the hands of the Nazis, by his annual Tisha B’av introduction to Rav Schwab’s Kinnah, thereby creating the proper atmosphere of solemnity, rousing the hearts of campers and staff alike to prayerful lamentation;- Could always introduce concisely and eloquently, with no preparation, through the means of a poignantly and succinctly stated Torah thought, the appointed speaker by a Shabbos meal, highlighting the unique qualities specific to that speaker;and yet also [...see WhatsApp group for more]------------------------------------------Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!!https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk---------------------------------------------------To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059, or email [email protected].
