First Thing is First | Today is National Emergency Medical Services - EMS Day , a day which aims to recognise the important role of EMS in achieving universal health coverage in South Africa, launched in 2019.  In a medical emergency, it may be critical to get to an emergency room. For the majority of South Africans, this means relying on a government ambulance to get to the nearest hospital.
