Kids are turning reading time into playtime at Fairfax County’s Paws & Read program, where they read to shelter cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even birds every Tuesday afternoon through August 25th—free, no gear needed. Inspired by a school-night version, it’s helping students ditch screens, build confidence, and bond with animals who’re now loving the attention—and sometimes, even getting adopted by their readers. Parents love it as a fun, screen-free way to get kids outdoors, and the shelter wins too: more socialized pets, happier hearts. Summer ends August 25th, but don’t worry—the Reading Tails evening program kicks back up when school starts.
